A hurricane conference is being held in Baton Rouge through Wednesday on the LSU Campus. Topics discussed at the meeting today included hurricane climatology and future implications for Louisiana. Representatives from the National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center and local coastal experts discussed many issues including the subsidence of coastal Louisiana. Subsidence, or sinking of our ground, along the coast is actually outpacing sea level rise by a factor of 4 times. This issue will continue be a major factor during storm surge events associated with tropical storms and hurricanes. Coastal vulnerability to tropical systems was hilighted while preparations for the upcoming season were discussed. The conference continues Wednesday with topics such as coastal protection and restoration, and communicating "in the Face of the Storm".
