Thread: Ragin' Dave's 3-part Breakdown Coastal Carolina (abbreviated)

  1. UL Football Ragin' Dave's 3-part Breakdown Coastal Carolina (abbreviated)

Guys, I am going to give you an abbreviated breakdown of Coastal, mostly due to the fact that it is Monday and I am still without power and we are leaving tonight to bring my wife to the hospital to have our baby tonight at 9 PM. (she did say that if we have it Tuesday at some point, that she would be ok with me going to the game, she is a special lady.

First off, this is not the same Coastal team that we faced last year, they are much, much better. This team that finished 5-7 and 2-6 in the conference is off to a much better 3-0 start this year and offensively they are a much better football team. It all starts at the QB position where you can see the biggest improvement. But they are stacked offensively all over the field. So far this year they have defeated Kansas, Campbell and Arkansas State, but to give you an example they beat Kansas 12-7 last year, but in 2020 they beat them 38-23. They lost to stAte last year 28-27, but this year they beat them 52-23. Make no mistake about it this team is good both on offense and defense.

QB--this is one of the deepest positions on the field, where they return both starters from last year and those guys are behind a true freshman. Grayson McCall. McCall has put up some strong numbers he is completing 67% of his passes with 9 TD's and only 1 Int. He also can hurt you with his legs where he has rushed for 139 yards and 2 TD's at a 4.5 ypa clip. Behind him are both guys who played and started last year Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter, so they are deep at the QB position, but they are a much better football team with McCall behind center. We much contain him.

RB--Their main guy and pretty much their only guy is a player who has seemingly been at CCU for 100 years in CJ Marable. Marable has rushed for 190 yards in 3 games with 3 TD's and is averaging 4.0 ypc. Marable is a transfer from Presbyterian College in NC. But they do have a couple of guys behind him that are pretty good. Shemari Jones and Reese White, both guys have rushed for close to 100 yards in 3 games and have combined for 3 TD's. They will spell Marable, but Marable is the main guy, no doubt. He can break big plays and more importantly he can take a loss of 3 and turn it into a gain of 30 at any point. He is good and he is a nice complement to McCall at QB.

WR/TE--McCall likes to spread it out to multiple receivers, he has 5 receivers with more that 6 catches on the season, but the main threat is 6]2" 190 lb WR Jaivon Helligh, he has 12 catches 219 yards and 3 TD's. His next favorite is his TE Isaiah Likely, Likely is big at 6-4 245. He has 7 catches for 215 yards and 3 TD's. Behind these two are Grad Transfer from Charleston Southern, Kameron Brown and Redshirt Senior Sam Denmark. Also CJ Marable can catch passes out of the backfield.

OL--Their OL is been very good both in pass protection and running blocking this year. They are anchored by 2 seniors on the OL, at Center it is Sam Thompson who started 11 games last year, at RG it is Trey Carter who started 12 games last year. Redshrit Junior Antwine Loper will cover the LT position and they finish out with Freshman Willie Lampkin at LT.

CCU is averaging over 44 points per game, 198 yards on the ground and 242 yards per game through the air, they have a very potent offense.

I'll be sending the Defense and Special Teams shortly.

  2. Default Ragin' Dave Abbreviated ST Coastal Breakdown

    Part Deaux.......

Punter--Coastal's punter is a Redshirt Senior he has been part of the program for a long time. Charles Ouverson is averaging 40.44 yards per punt on 9 punts this season. He has a long of 49 yards and 1 touchback. 5 of his 9 punts have been downed inside the 20 yard line. He is not exceptional, but is very consistent on his punts.

Kicker--Their Kickoff and PK are the same person, Massimo Biscardi, sounds like an Italian cookie. Biscardi is a Junior and is only 2-2 on FG this season as well as 17-17 on XP. He has been their PK since 2018 overall he is 38-53 on FG attempts, going 15-20 last year and 13-16 in 2018, he is a good one, he has a career long of 53 yards. On Kickoffs he kicked off 22 times, with only 8 TB, so Chris Smith should have a chance to return some. His average is 58.6 yards per kickoff which means that most of his kickoffs land around the 6 or 7 yards line.

Punt Returns-- Their main guy on punt returns is Jaivon Helligh, a WR spoken about on the offensive breakdown. Helligh has only returned 3 punts this season for a 5.33 yard average, but his long has been 19, so he has lost yardage on the other 2 returns.

Kickoff returns--They struggle here, their main guy is a threat but has been contained this season, it is CJ Marable, their #1 running back, he has returned 5 Kickoffs for a 14.4 yard average with a long of only 24 yards. Reese White has returned 1 kickoff for 19 yards. We will have to contain Marable as he is a threat every time he touches the ball. We can't let him have big returns against us.

    Defensive Breakdown will be next.

    Action packed week. WOW!

    Thanks for taking/making the time.

  4. UL Football Ragin' Dave Abbreviated Defense Coastal Breakdown

DL--Although undersized, they are very fast on defense including the DL. One of the leaders on the DL is Redshirt Senior C.J. Brewer. Brewer is a DT and is 6'2" 280 lb. Tarron Jackson is their DE and is another Redshirt Senior. He is 6th on the team in tackles on the season. The main underclassmen in the front 7 is NT Jerrod Clark. He is a Sophomore from Mass. He is 6'4 and 325. We should have an advantage size wise on the Offensive line, but these guys are very active.

LB--Coastal is good at the 2nd level and very experienced with their top 4 guys being either Juniors and/or Seniors, I mean real good, their top 3 tacklers this year are all LB and 4 of their top 5 leaders are LB. It starts with Redshirt Senior Team Captain, Silas Kelly. Kelly is averaging 7 tackles a game and has 3 sacks on the year and 4 TFL, but it does not stop there. Senior LB Teddy Gallagher is 2nd on the team also with 21 tackles and 2 TFL and is followed up by a Junior from Canada, Enock Makonzo, Makonzo has 18 tackles and 2 TFL. Makonzo missed almost all of 2019 after transferring in from JUCO. He is a very welcome addition to an already very good and veteran LB corp. These guys are very active and very good. Their #5 tackler is Junior LB Jeffrey Gunter, he has 3.5 sacks and is the team leader on the season and 12 total tackles.

DB--Coastal has 4 INT's on the season all coming from 4 different players. Their CB's are D'Jordan Strong and Derick Bush. Strong is the 3rd leading tackler on the team and has a pick. Bush also has a pick on the season. Alex Spillum is one safety and the other is KJ Johnson II. Spillum has one of the other picks on the season.

I'm start to look forward to your breakdown each game. I hate soft hands in the db We should be able to break a tackle or two.

They shouldn't, you will not be running the ball.
