Guys, I am going to give you an abbreviated breakdown of Coastal, mostly due to the fact that it is Monday and I am still without power and we are leaving tonight to bring my wife to the hospital to have our baby tonight at 9 PM. (she did say that if we have it Tuesday at some point, that she would be ok with me going to the game, she is a special lady.
First off, this is not the same Coastal team that we faced last year, they are much, much better. This team that finished 5-7 and 2-6 in the conference is off to a much better 3-0 start this year and offensively they are a much better football team. It all starts at the QB position where you can see the biggest improvement. But they are stacked offensively all over the field. So far this year they have defeated Kansas, Campbell and Arkansas State, but to give you an example they beat Kansas 12-7 last year, but in 2020 they beat them 38-23. They lost to stAte last year 28-27, but this year they beat them 52-23. Make no mistake about it this team is good both on offense and defense.
QB--this is one of the deepest positions on the field, where they return both starters from last year and those guys are behind a true freshman. Grayson McCall. McCall has put up some strong numbers he is completing 67% of his passes with 9 TD's and only 1 Int. He also can hurt you with his legs where he has rushed for 139 yards and 2 TD's at a 4.5 ypa clip. Behind him are both guys who played and started last year Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter, so they are deep at the QB position, but they are a much better football team with McCall behind center. We much contain him.
RB--Their main guy and pretty much their only guy is a player who has seemingly been at CCU for 100 years in CJ Marable. Marable has rushed for 190 yards in 3 games with 3 TD's and is averaging 4.0 ypc. Marable is a transfer from Presbyterian College in NC. But they do have a couple of guys behind him that are pretty good. Shemari Jones and Reese White, both guys have rushed for close to 100 yards in 3 games and have combined for 3 TD's. They will spell Marable, but Marable is the main guy, no doubt. He can break big plays and more importantly he can take a loss of 3 and turn it into a gain of 30 at any point. He is good and he is a nice complement to McCall at QB.
WR/TE--McCall likes to spread it out to multiple receivers, he has 5 receivers with more that 6 catches on the season, but the main threat is 6]2" 190 lb WR Jaivon Helligh, he has 12 catches 219 yards and 3 TD's. His next favorite is his TE Isaiah Likely, Likely is big at 6-4 245. He has 7 catches for 215 yards and 3 TD's. Behind these two are Grad Transfer from Charleston Southern, Kameron Brown and Redshirt Senior Sam Denmark. Also CJ Marable can catch passes out of the backfield.
OL--Their OL is been very good both in pass protection and running blocking this year. They are anchored by 2 seniors on the OL, at Center it is Sam Thompson who started 11 games last year, at RG it is Trey Carter who started 12 games last year. Redshrit Junior Antwine Loper will cover the LT position and they finish out with Freshman Willie Lampkin at LT.
CCU is averaging over 44 points per game, 198 yards on the ground and 242 yards per game through the air, they have a very potent offense.
I'll be sending the Defense and Special Teams shortly.
