Texas three-star Cameron Whitfield commits to Ragin Cajuns
By STEVE WILTFONG
Commit No. 13 for the University of Louisiana comes from Pearland (Texas) Dawson three-star defensive end Cameron Whitfield. He announced his college plans early Saturday evening.
Whitfield is pledge No. 13 for head coach Billy Napier and his coaching staff, choosing to play for the rising Sun Belt Conference power over opportunities from the likes of Southern Miss, Arizona, Wyoming, Hawaii, East Carolina, Washington State, Tulane, Houston, New Mexico, Nevada, UTSA and Memphis.
Napier and company extended a full-ride to the 6-foot-1 1/2, 245-pound Whitfield back in April on his birthday.
"They treated me like family since day one," Whitfield told 247Sports. "There was a tight connection with me and the entire staff, especially with Joe Hamilton from UL."
Whitfield is an active player on Friday nights. As a junior he registered 79 tackles including 23 stops for loss, seven sacks and 12 more quarterback hurries, and in his opener as a senior posted six tackles with one coming in the backfield. He loves the trajectory of the program under Napier, a team that is coming off a program record 11 wins last fall and sits at 3-0 and ranked inside the Top25 this go-round.
"UL has shown to be a big-time program this year," Whitfield said. "With my talents I would be able to help continue their success my freshmen year."
Whitfield also talked about his decision on social media.
"First off, I would like to thank God for giving me the ability and opportunity to be able to play at the next level," he posted on Twitter. "This wouldn't be possible without him. I want to thank my Mom and Dad for being there throughout my whole journey. They always keep me motivated and guide me into the right direction. I also appreciate my friends and teammates. I would like to thank Coach Garcia and the whole Dawson football coaching staff for molding me into a great athlete on and off the field. Lastly, I want to thank all of the college programs who showed interest in me. I am truly grateful.
"With that being said, I am committed to Ragin Cajuns football!"
2019: Was named the District 23-6A Defensive MVP as a junior.
