Thread: BEWARE

  1. #1

    Default BEWARE

In 1989, FSU was #1 preseason. In their first game, USM dropped them 30-26. FSU lost the next game to #10 Clemson.

However, the 'Noles did not lose another game the rest of the season, beating #21 LA State, #17 Syracuse, #11 Auburn, #2 Miami, and finally, #7 Nebraska in the Fiesta. At the end of the season, they were once again receiving #1 votes, as many pundits argued that they were the best team in the nation.

Meanwhile, USM, with Brett Favre at the helm, lost its next 4 games, and ended up with a losing season... including a defeat at the hands of underdog Louisiana-Lafayette.

Then recall how three years ago Troy popped LA State... and dropped the next game to a 4-8 South Al team (3-9 if Troy had taken care of business).

You see it constantly, 'Latecomer's Letdown': when a new team is rising, and not used to beating major teams, almost without fail after a major win, it loses the next game.

Even if they're playing the Montessori school down the road.

GSU will not be a cakewalk. In 2018 they went 2-10, improving to 7-6 in just one year.

If you folks want to help the Cajuns, stop talking about ISU and all the national attention, and start talking about GSU.

    And don't bet this week.

Time to start with the "one game at a time" approach. Enough about Saturday, over and done and won't do anyone any good if we drop the Garbage State er...Georgia State game. And I wouldn't touch that 17 point line with a 10 ft. pole.

Will I agree, fans talking about last weekend has no effect on the upcoming game. As a fan, I will bask in the glory of all that happened last weekend and I will continue to talk about it forever.

I agree with CajunFun. During the Saints game my son and I was talking about all the accolades the cajuns was getting and not much what was ahead of them. Having 10 more games the last one don't mean much at this point. They won it, so let it be......let's win the next one and talk about that.

Not to mention the Panthers waltzed into Knoxville last year and beat Tennessee.

    And I almost forgot.

1996, UL beats #25 Texas A&M, 29-22, for our first ranked win.

With Jake Delhomme, Brandon Stokely, Damon Mason, Charles Johnson, Britt Jackson, and several other standouts, we dropped the next game in a blowout to USM, 27-52.

Then ended up with a losing record, and no bowl.

You think off-campus distractions don't make a difference? A quote from my favorite author:

[Consider] the 1982 “Apple Cup,” the annual contest between the University of Washington and their in-state rivals, Washington State University. At that time, WSU had a long history of weak football teams and entered the game at 2-7-1. UW on the other hand was 9-1, ranked #5 in the country, and the win over their rival would give them the Rose Bowl invitation. It was going to be a cake walk.

But this is a bitter rivalry, a long-fuming feud. The UW media got in the act. They were merciless, suggesting that WSU didn’t belong on the same field with UW, much less in the same conference. The humiliation started even before the game did.

Newspaper articles with these comments found their way into the WSU locker room, where they were prominently posted. All week long, the underdog endured the hype and humiliation. After which, they went out, won the game 24-20, and knocked UW out of the Rose Bowl. After the game, UW’s coach publicly thanked the press for winning the game for WSU.

BTW, I talked to someone who was at the game. Weak, pathetic little Wazoo ran it up the middle all game long.

It takes a medium-sized city to build a football team.

Absolutely, every game is more pressure to prove that you belong in the national rankings. It's something that is new to our players and our fans. Luckily, it's not new to Napier, and I believe that he will provide the leadership to keep our team focused. I'm on the side of letting the fans be fans and bask in this tremendous glow. Players and Coaches, a completely different story. If they let it get in their mind, then a loss is not far away. That's the next big question for this team that everyone is wondering, do they really belong? It's an anxious but exciting week.

For every example you give about a team falling flat, I can give 10 on teams that did not. The only reason it is news because it really doesn't happen that often. If it did, then it wouldn't be news.

I think fans can talk about the Iowa State win all they want. Enjoy it. Soak it in. We have that luxury.

The team, however, has a job to do. I think they will be prepared.

Georgia State will be a bit of a mystery. It's a game we should win. But then again, that's what the guys in Ames thought too.

We are heavy favorites, but while I'll be enjoying the win from Saturday, I'll be reading up on the Panthers.

I'll tell you one thing....this is fun.

I think enough of us loyal Cajun fans suffer from a high enough level of CDS that we'll be pacing the room during the entire GA State game, or for every game this season.

Do the Cajuns a favor: post what you read about GSU here...
