    SPLIT THE UNIVERSITY?
From the Lafayette Daily Advertiser of August 15th, 1965:
CHAMBER BOARD REAFFIRMS OPPOSITION TO USL MOVE
The Board of Directors of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce has reaffirmed its position opposing the move of the freshman class of the University of Southwestern Louisiana to New Iberia.
Meeting in executive session Friday, the board adopted a new resolution which President James E. Reed Jr. prepared for release this morning.
    The resolution reads as follows:
"Be it resolved that the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Inc., acting through its duly elected and authorized board of directors, hereby reaffirms in all respects its resolution of August 18, 1964 opposing the proposal of the University of Southwestern Louisiana to transfer its entire freshman class to new facilities which the university proposes to establish on the site of the former Naval Air Station near New Iberia.
Be it further resolved that in our considered judgment the proposed transfer of said freshman class would be extremely detrimental to the best interests of the university, including its student body, from both an economic and an educational standpoint and that other plans should be developed for utilization of the former Naval Air Station which will not in any manner dilute the image, prestige and effectiveness of the university as now constituted.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be directed to the Governor of the State of Louisiana, to each member of the State Board of Education, to the State Superintendent of Public Education and to the President of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and that copies, hereof, be made available to all news media." - Lafayette Daily Advertiser 8/15/1965.

    Thanks Frenchie.

I had read a bit about the opposition to opening the New Iberia campus. Not long therafter another school opened a campus in Eunice.

I was unaware that the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce was piling on with the opposition. A little greed in action.

It's said really, because in 1898 New Iberia was one of the towns on board in recommending the city of Lafayette as the host for UL.

Do we really need an entire class go away from the main campus? No. I could actually see some freshman core classes being added in Opelousas, New Iberia, and Crowley. Still we found a way.

I really don't believe off campus freshmen was ever intended to be a permanent solution.

It was their second attempt at growing the universities footprint beyond just land holdings.

And what was the rational behind that?

To grow the educational footprint of the University.

If they could get an "at New Iberia," then an "at Eunice" became a possibility, followed by an "at Alexandria."

No "at New Iberia" then the school would forever be stuck at Lafayette.

After the forced landlock, some other school picked up those afore mentioned satellite locations, minus NI.

ps back when the majority of funding came from the State, educational footprint was HUGE.

At Alexandria was way before 1965! 1959-60 as I recall going to Alexandria with my aunt. We’d pass the juco.
