  4. UL Soccer Louisiana Opens 2020 Season With Shutout Win Over ACU, 2-0

On the field for the first time in 301 days and playing one of the first athletic events on campus since March 11, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team used goals from newcomer Lizzie Mayfield and senior captain Julianne DeBlieux to post a 2-0 victory over Abilene Christian before a crowd of 563 on Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.

Jordan Higgins pitched a shutout in goal for Louisiana (1-0-0) in her debut, stopping four shots overall and helping the Ragin' Cajuns post its first season-opening victory since a 1-0 win over Sam Houston State on Aug. 22, 2014.

And in a year that has forced many schools to postpone athletic competition until Spring 2021, not even a 45-minute weather delay in the 87th minute due to lightning in the area could stop Louisiana or ACU (0-1) from getting the season-opening match in.

Mayfield, playing in her first match as a Ragin' Cajun after two years at Big 12 school West Virginia, gave Louisiana all the scoring it would need in the 18th minute when she blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past ACU goalkeeper Erin Smith into the upper right corner of the goal.

The junior would assist on Louisiana's second goal of the match when her crossing pass from the left side deflected off an ACU defender and found the foot of DeBlieux, who beat Smith with a shot in the upper left corner for her first goal since 2018.

Louisiana held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the match and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Smith added four saves for the Wildcats, who finished 12-5-2 last season and is scheduled to play four matches during the fall before resuming Southland Conference play in the spring. Natalie Jones attempted a pair of shots for ACU, including one on goal while Alyssia Anuat, Natalie Wodka and Brianna Diaz each attempted shots on goal.

Louisiana will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Foley, Ala., to face Sun Belt Conference rival and defending league champion South Alabama at the Foley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Nice victory. The camera work was superior to any I recall last year on Cajuns streaming network. Hopefully it’s as good when not on the plus

On the bright side, we only have until November 3rd to continue putting up with all of this crap.
The virus is going away on November 4th?

  10. UL Soccer Late Match Heroics Lift Louisiana Past Jags, 2-1

Freshman Alyssa Abbott scored on a short-handed goal in the 107th minute and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team used some late-match heroics to post a 2-1 victory over defending Sun Belt Conference champion South Alabama on Sunday at the Foley Sports Complex.

Lizzie Mayfield notched her second consecutive match with a goal and an assist while Jordan Higgins stopped seven shots as Louisiana recorded its third 2-0-0 start to the season in school history and first since 2012.

South Alabama (0-1-0), which finished 16-4-2 last season, took a 1-0 lead on Brenna McPartlan's goal in the 16th minute before Higgins kept the Jags off the board for the rest of the night.

USA held on to its lead until late in the 89th minute when Mayfield placed a shot past freshman Jag goalkeeper Anna Brunner for her second goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1 and sending the contest between the schools into overtime for the third consecutive season.

Louisiana, which was held without a shot in the first half before out-shooting the Jags 10-6 after intermission, had a chance to win it early in the first overtime as Gwen Mummert's attempt at the bottom right corner of the goal was stopped by Brunner.

After a red card was issued to the Ragin' Cajuns in the 98th minute, giving South Alabama a one-player advantage for the rest of the match, Louisiana kept the Jags from any shot attempts the rest of the way while getting off two attempts in the final nine minutes of play.

Freshman Lucy Ortiz had an attempt that sailed high for Louisiana before Abbott sealed the win with a shot past Brunner, giving the Ragin' Cajuns just their second win in the series dating back to 2010.

Higgins, who recorded four saves in the second half, stopped a penalty kick by USA's Ana Helmert in the ninth minute before stopping back-to-back attempts by the Jags' Tabea Griss and McPartlan in the 74th minute.

McPartlan attempted five shots to lead South Alabama, which held an 11-10 advantage in shots. Brunner added three saves in her first career start for the Jags with Helmert attempted a pair of shots on-goal.

Louisiana will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 13) when it plays host to Southland Conference opponent Stephen F. Austin (1-0-1) at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m., start and will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available at CajunStats.com.

That’s impressive. On the road against a 16 win program from a year ago and you win with 10 players. Something may be cooking at the soccer complex.

Yes that is impressive. I did not know South Alabama won the league last season. Conference championship is all we can shoot for since the NCAA championships have been postponed to the spring.
