This ain't 1985 where the major source of local sports news was the six o'clock and ten o'clock sports casts. Those four minute segments, if that long, are going the way of the dinosaur.
The media has a view of it's own, I heard it every time I broke a story on a commitment. It's not official until it's announced by the program and released by the media. This is how many view it when it comes to covering college athletics. Bottom line, some are too lazy to follow leads, make a few phone calls or actually contact an athlete through social media for a interview.

So I think these are two different things.

As I understand it, schools are not allowed to announce or talk about commitments. They can release official announcements once paperwork is in and approved. If media is waiting on that, they are never gonna report on commits then.

Student-athletes can announce their own commitments and the media can report on that.

I wouldn’t want to be the one to report a transfer before its official.
Let’s say a media source reports it and it doesn’t happen, then the media source would look even more foolish than reporting “a week” late. It looks like a no win situation for the media.
I think the “media” is doing a great job on reporting the facts about this program. Let’s remember the facts are important. I would prefer the media to report facts and not rumors. I am not a fan of #fakenews

I got you. Back in the day, they didn't have Twitter, they didn't have Facebook, they didn't have Instagram. When a player posts on their Twitter account they're transferring, I've got to believe them. If the media is waiting on an official announcement, and they report it three or four days after the player posts on Twitter, what's the use? It's already old news. If you notice, a couple of transfers ago, it was well-known the player was transfering because it was all over social media. The local reporters reported it about 4 days later, after it was "official". They didn't wait for the "official" announcement this time, because they know they're getting scooped. Looks like some of the local media has changed their mind and are not waiting till it's official.

John, it's not unusual for an athlete to announce his or her commitment to a program and the athlete changes their mind. In fact it happens about 25% of the time when it comes to college football recruiting. If an athlete use social media to make that announcement, the media should report it. It's news. If the athletes choses to change their minds, it is also news. Both are accurate at the time it was reported.

I think social media is the root of lot of our issues that we have today. I try to gather facts and listen. From a parents perspective, it’s kind of hard to listen to people that think they know the story. I get a little sensitive to that, that’s why I support the media reporting after the official announcement

Yep, it’s news alright. I’ve seen it go both ways. At times I get information about a kid transferring or not being happy at a school, I try and keep it all to myself. I wouldn’t want to put news out that I am not confident in. I guess that’s why I am not a media person.

News is news. A kid says he’s committed to XYZ. It’s okay to report kid has said they’re going to XYZ. I don’t think a reporter looks bad unless he’s claiming that he’s got a more private source and it fails, kid ends up at ABC.

What you said makes sense but everyone is looking for the latest, breaking news. If a kid puts it on social media that there coming I have no reason to believe that they will back out. Ladys seem to be a little more committed them the men. Karly coming is all over the internet and on every softball website.

If the athlete is willing to go on the record, that's different than sharing one's personal knowledge with the media. Now if the report is anonymous, it shouldn't be reported. I've had parents and athletes tell they are committed or transferring to a program, but they aren't ready to make the announcement public, at that point it would be wise not to report it or mention it.

Mark. I think any player coming in will have to earn a spot on the team. Glasco gives guarantees to no one. Glasco really likes Mayeaux. If Jade Gortarez is going to find playing time at third, she is going to have to beat out Mayeaux. Frankie Izard is a slapper with a lot of speed. Glasco has stated he wants power hitters 1 through 9. I think Izard is destined for a pinch-runner roll. The pitchers, Heath and Foreman are good pitchers with huge upsides. Working with the best pitching coach in the nation, I look for them to one day be on the Summer Ellyson level. The question with Heath is, will she be a pitcher or slugger. I doubt she will be allowed to do both. Whatever happens, I don't think there's a team in America that has more depth then this one. It's good to have depth. Look what happened to Alabama. They had no catcher and Bailey was forced to play behind the plate. They eventually got some girl to leave high school early to join the team. When that happened, I was pretty sure they were not going to live up to their preseason billing. Picked as the number one team in every major poll and favorites to win the national championship. I just don't think that could have happened with a high school catcher.

Jana John's is now following the Cajuns on twitter. Doesn't mean much but never the less very interesting to say the least.
