My experience to what is called the modern Gypsies in the US is limited. The show "American Gypsy" on National Geographic left me with a less than flattering view of some of these people. Many of them are involved in construction as independent contractors and unfortunately some have them have earned the mistrust of their lifestyle, especially those that have hired them to do work like roofing and sheet rock jobs.
Nonetheless, no one is referring to this group of people when using the term gypped. Hell, kids were using this term back in the 60's and 70's because you were taught not to use words like "screwed". If you weren't a child of those era's your wouldn't have a clue what I'm talking about. But in today's environment of oversensitivity and hyperbole, someone is bound to find offense with the use of the word.
