My experience to what is called the modern Gypsies in the US is limited. The show "American Gypsy" on National Geographic left me with a less than flattering view of some of these people. Many of them are involved in construction as independent contractors and unfortunately some have them have earned the mistrust of their lifestyle, especially those that have hired them to do work like roofing and sheet rock jobs.

Nonetheless, no one is referring to this group of people when using the term gypped. Hell, kids were using this term back in the 60's and 70's because you were taught not to use words like "screwed". If you weren't a child of those era's your wouldn't have a clue what I'm talking about. But in today's environment of oversensitivity and hyperbole, someone is bound to find offense with the use of the word.

As are the group the ‘Irish Travelers’ also are known to be conmen and do shoddy work.

I much rather hire locals I know to be good workers if I couldn’t afford a licensed roofing business. I’d never under any circumstances use people traveling into the area after a storm. Regardless if you hire people uninsured for workmen’s comp and general liability you leave yourself open to much bigger liabilities than you might think. Way beyond the cost of the project.

I am routinely called, and refer to myself, as a coonass. Does that make me racist against myself?

It's all soooo tired and ridiculous. He's offended, she's offended, they're offended. Who gives a frick? I'm sick of it all

The verb is rooted in the noun Gypsy.

Why even comment? You are obviously less apathetic than claimed.

And yet your average person hasn't a clue and doesn't care because the intent is not there. JMI

Obviously. Some would care if they knew "gypped" or the more commonly used "jewed" were offensive. Some obviously don't care who they offend, intentionally or not, which was proven here. Just a social experiment.

Exactly, its not a race or protected class of people. It's a term people associate with. This whole argument is crazy. And to use "racial slur" was not appropriate for the context of the comment made earlier. If someone wants to be offended by it, as you appear to be, that is with them.
