I can't point you to a source or a language but I thought Gypsy meant "wanderer" and was predicated on their capitalistic marketing efforts. Ie will travel to make a living.

I seen to recall Gypsy refers to the mistaken belief that they originated in Egypt. Can’t give you a good source, but the Wikipedia article alluding to that.

After reading your reference, I'm not so sure the actual word "Gypsy" is derogatory.

I say that with nothing to go on except that they referred to themselves as the "Gypsy Lore Society."

Like I said I’m working from a memory. They were confused with Egyptians, and the Gypsy was a disrespectful way to refer to them. Amazingly this article kind of reflects our views on the name Louisiana and the jerks.
