Thread: College basketball a big transfer game for Cajuns, others

  1. UL Basketball College basketball a big transfer game for Cajuns, others

The UL basketball team has four new signees for the 2020-21 season, and among them just one — Michael Thomas, a point guard from Hamilton Christian in Lake Charles — is straight out of high school.

Two — former Mississippi State guard Devin Butts and ex-University of Portland big man Theo Akwuba — played at different NCAA Division I programs last season.

Crazy that almost 900 basketball players have entered the transfer portal.

I really dislike what has happened to the game.

Some things you can predict ahead of time.

I never attached a number but the word "FLOODGATES" came to mind and keyboard when this was announced.

That’s the NCAA trying to stay out of the legal crosshairs. All of this is to placate about a score of players a year. Having said that I find it troubling that players who go to class, practice hard, follow the rules can be taken off scholarships and still have to sit out a year. Also coaches get someone to buy out their contracts so breaking the contracts costs them zero.

No doubt, transfer portal is just ONE of the things that is killing CBB, in my opinion. For me, following players for 3-4 years at a University was great enjoyment and watching them grow. For the most part, the game revolves around one and done players, very difficult to build an attachment that way.

It's not good for the pro ranks either.

4-year players used to dragnet interested university fans with them to their pro team.

I still know some Yankee and Panther fans.

The portal has definitely increased transfers but the floodgates are not even close to being opened. That will come when the 1 time transfer rule is actually passed which it will be at some point. It will bring outright free agency to college athletics.

    900 from how many schools?

That’s about 3 per div I school. That’s a flood. You can’t even run 3 scholarships with a redshirt year assuming no attrition for any reason.

Expect the transfer rule without penalty rule to pass later this month. However all indications are it won't go into effect until the 21-22 academic year. That means our two D1 transfers will need to be given waivers. We are working hard on putting the story on why those should be granted at this time. I feel pretty good that Butts will be granted the OK as his involves an injury. Not as confident about Theo but I would say it is more likely than not his request will be granted. I also don't expect to hear anything on these for a few weeks and would not be surprised if an answer does not come until close to the beginning of the season.

The math is unsustainable. 3 transfers and 2-3 graduates on 12 person team = 40-50% turnover rate every season.
