    Default Interview with Dr. Maggard

    No radio gig? No problem.

I'm scheduled to visit with Dr. Maggard tomorrow via ZOOM. I'll ask him for updates on various things, including fall sports, basketball scheduling, budgets, travel and the like. It will probably be Thursday before it is available on ragincajuns.com.

Can I suggest a few questions regarding basketball scheduling. We have been told we are playing UNO but not told if it is home or away. Can we clarify that. If we only have 16 conference games we will lose 2 home games vs this past season. Will that force us to play more non D1 games. I presume we can't afford to buy D1 games in this environment. Is that correct. Will we play more guarantee games on the road to help the budget. Is the game at Houston a guarantee game and if so how much are they paying us. For that matter how much is Texas paying us. I ask these questions assuming no state schools or area schools such as Lamar will want to play home and home with the first game here. That is in normal circumstances. Perhaps the crisis we are in will force people to think differently. Someone suggested the politicians should strongly urge all state schools to agree to play home and home. You could even play them twice in the same year. That is a great idea as it would help everyone's schedule and budget in a financially tough situation. OK that is more than a few questions. I know there are a lot of other issues to cover in the interview. Therefore, can you pick out a couple here you believe are the most pertinent. If you wanted to do a deep dive into only the basketball schedule situation, you could perhaps have a Zoom meeting with Mike Murphy. I think he is still the main guy on that. I realize the conference needs to make a decision on that part of the schedule so as the non conference schedule can be focused on. Hopefully the conference decision comes soon.

I sure as heck hope so. Should have been done years ago. These are program advancement opportunities. The fact that we get paid to go to these places is just gravy to me.

    Thanks J.

Ask him when will we finally end the madness and create 2 regionally distinct conferences or mega-divisions of one huge conference. If the people in charge at these universities and the NCAA can't get this right during the next year, then they should all be fired.

    There are no more excuses.

I didn't get into minute specifics about scheduling, but I can tell you, based on sources I have, we're getting 165K for the trips to Texas and Houston. There will probably be a third guarantee game as well.

And, not etched in stone, but I'm hearing we will play UNO twice this year. They will come to Lafayette in 2021-22 and we will go there in 22-23.

Most of the rest is covered in the interview.

No excuses? Maybe no GOOD excuses, but there will definitely be excuses made. I would put the odds at under 50% with the amount of egos & history involved.

Good news on the UNO deal. Hopefully we can do that with more state and area schools this year. This is not a year to worry about much the NET rating when making scheduling decisions. Thanks for the summary Jay. When will the interview be posted?

It is difficult for me to remember a time when I haven't been impressed with Dr. Maggard. Just exudes competence, class and accessibility.

He certainly exudes confidence even in these trying times.

The more stressful the situation, the calmer you need to be in order to keep your teammates focused. Seems he goes by that philosophy. For those that don't have time to listen to the entire interview, here is a basketball tidbit. We will play more non D1 home games to balance the upcoming schedule this coming season. However that is for this season only. I would not be surprised if that is as many as three. On a more optimistic note he is encouraged that there will be some type of scheduling alliance with CUSA schools soon. Not sure how official that will be. Right now we are scheduled to play La. Tech at home and at USM. Those are two CUSA schools. Would be great if we get could two more. One at home and one away. Personally I am very skeptical about getting any of those schools to come to Lafayette first. What we should do is play some of those twice in the same year. Works for everyone that way. Good information in the interview on a variety of subjects. It is 26 minutes. I encourage all to listen to the entire interview.
