Michael Cook combined with a pair of relievers for a shutout of Alcorn State in his 2010 season debut Wednesday evening at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field as Louisiana completed a two-game sweep with an 11-0 triumph.
The Ragin' Cajuns (8-4) gave Cook a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then he took charge. Cook retired 18 of the final 20 Alcorn hitters he saw which included a stretch of 12 consecutive.
Blake Wascom struck out the side in the eighth and Ryland Parker retired the Braves in order in the ninth to complete the Cajuns' first shutout victory of the season.
Louisiana now turns its attention to Sun Belt Conference play which starts this weekend against Arkansas State at "The Tigue". The Cajuns and Red Wolves (8-4) open their three-game series Friday at 6 p.m.
Dillon Guillory collected his second, three-RBI game of the series and led all Cajuns in that category.
Alex Fuselier was 2-for-4 at the plate, extending his career-best hitting streak to nine games. Jordan Poirrier upped his current hitting streak to six games and Chad Keefer's moved to four games.
Troy Williams was charged with the loss for Alcorn Sate (4-9). He allowed six runs over six innings, but miscues in the field of play led to five unearned runs for UL.
Louisiana improved to 3-2 on its current 10-game homestand. The Cajuns have now won three straight.
A two-out single by Poirrier started a rally for the Cajuns in the bottom of the first. Keefer followed with a single to left and stole second to give the Cajuns two runners in scoring position.
Both would score on a throwing error made following a Matt Goulas grounder to third base and UL had an early 2-0 lead.
Fuselier led off the Cajuns' half of the second with a double into the left field corner. He moved to third on a Trask Switzenberg grounder and scored on a Guillory sacrifice fly.
A pair of Alcorn miscues in the fifth inning helped the Cajuns tack on two of the three runs that scored which increased the lead to 6-0. Williams threw the ball away on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Greg Fontenot to allow the first run to score and later threw a wild pitch that allowed Fontenot to score the second run.
A two-out RBI single by Goulas capped off the scoring in the frame.
Louisiana sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh - the second time batting through the order in an inning in the series - and scored five additional runs open a double-figure lead, 11-0.
