I understand the “big inning” strategy, but I guess I never thought about using it with a team who is struggling to hit the ball and striking out so much.

Can't disagree with any of you except to say if you read the quotes attributed to him he didn't come across as joking. Only he knows. Article was written by Buckley so who knows what Deggs really said. It's always possible Deggs was misquoted.
