Thread: Basketball Home Opener

    Default Basketball Home Opener

I expect a closer game tomorrow night than many anticipate. One reason is our opponent is better than most non D1 foes. They are 3 and 0 (granted with weak competition), have averaged well over 100 ppg, and forcing a high no. of turnovers. On our end we have a lack of D1 experience throughout the squad and are banged up. In addition to the loss of Caldwell, Tirus Smith is out with a health issue that has not been made public. Also, Jay said today than recent transfer Calvin Temple has been ruled ineligible for this season for now. Strange in that he left because his coach was let go for an off the court issue. Having said all that, I am sure there will be a lot of criticism of the program if the Cajuns don't blow them out. I think it is premature to draw too many conclusions whatever happens. A blowout will not indicate a good season to come and a close game does not mean a poor season will result. It is simply the first game and adjustments will be made following the contest regardless of what occurs.

Here is a link to Coach Marlin discussing the beginning of the season.

If Temple is ineligible for the season and Smith is out for a significant amount of time on top of the Cadwell injury that is a major blow to the depth of this team. Guys like Lafayette, Lowery, and Spenkuch will have to step up and could be capable but I do not like the way this season has gotten started.

I share your concern. Still, there are other capable players who will need to carry the load beyond the ones you mentioned. Hardy, Russell, and Wesley are experienced guards, Johnson/Julien are two guys who sat out last year but showed they have talent previously, Gueye was recruited by some major schools, and Wilson was one of the top HS players in the state last year. Key to me is finding that third big to help inside. When Smith comes back, that may not be an issue.

You do realize that if we lose to Loyola, we’re gonna be the laughing stock of this state? No D-1 program should lose to a NAIA. I don’t give two hairy rat’s asses what kind of injuries you have or how “young you are” or anything like that. A loss tomorrow night is 1000000% unacceptable. A UHaul will be outside Marlin’s house if we lose to Uptown Loyola High School.

I would hope we smoke this team or at least win convincingly regardless of our youth. It’s an NAIA school.

It's whatever for me if the big basketball supports are ok with squeaking by Lower divion schools that is on them ... I just know if football were to lose to the likes of North Alabama again there would be a stop payment issued on my RCAF check

Well, you already did that with basketball, so what's your point?

If we lose to a NAIA school in our home opener, I will not be at another game this year. Losing to them would be an embarrassment of epic proportions.

Season hasn't started yet. After today, I won't be.

Remember a long time ago when we were losing to the likes of Coastal Carolina at home in football.
