That’s the Times’ style. They use periods for all abbreviations. Very formal. They also still use Mr. and Mrs./Ms. when referring to people.

Yeah, this is great. But that part about okra being 'an essential' part of gumbo was almost as hard to take as their overusage of hyphens.
"To be fair, to some, okra is essential to gumbo. I'm not one of them, but my mom never made a gumbo without it."
