In their second meeting this season, Louisiana's Lady Cajuns softball team defeated Iowa State, 4-1, to claim the title at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Sunday. The two teams met previously at the Marriott Invitational in Houston, Texas with the Cajuns grabbing a 6-5 win in eight innings.
With the win, UL improves to 14-6 on the season. Iowa State drops to 10-11 on the year.
An early RBI-double from Lana Bowers in the top of the first would put the Cajuns up 1-0. Christi Orgeron was able to score from first on the play after reaching base on an error.
The Cajuns hung two more runs on the Cyclones early in the second frame. With one out, Melissa Verde was able to single to right field. Designated player Taryn Broussard, would then take the first pitch deep to right center for her fourth home run on the year.
Broussard would come through again for the Cajuns in the top of the seventh, hitting a solo home run to right field for a 4-0 lead.
The Cyclones would threaten in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. A hit batter would plate Iowa State's first run. But the Cajuns were able to get out of the jam with two ground outs and a line out.
Donna Bourgeois picked up her seventh win of the season after seven innings of work. She struck out seven while walking one. The Cyclones' lone run was unearned.
Vallie Gaspard led the Cajuns with three hits and Broussard finished the day 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs.
Christi Orgeron finished the day 1-for-3 with one run and a walk. For the weekend, the sophomore posted a .647 batting average. She had 11 hits, four of which were doubles and three were home runs. She led UL with 14 RBI and a staggering 1.412 slugging percentage. She drew one walk and recorded no strikeouts through all five games.
The Cajuns will return to action on Tuesday against McNeese State at Lamson Park. The doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
