Under normal circumstances he would not. But I will give you some reason he may.

    1. Give Butch the title Head Coach in waiting like Muschamp at Texas and what Jimbo Fisher had at Florida St.
    2. A chance to coach under Tim Floyd and continue to learn to prepare to become the next head coach. For many people this is the biggest draw back for Butch that he has no head coaching experience and in this role he will gain good experience to prepare.
    3. A chance to come back to UL where he always wanted to end up.
    4. Gets a chance to come back to Louisiana where he has great success in recruiting.
    5. With Floyd and Pierre together we should dominate Louisiana and the Sun Belt and make the NCAA tournament most years. Most likely more ofter than Okla St. would.
    6. A chance to really put UL on the basketball map and get this program back to a top 25 ranking.
    7. This may be his best and only chance to be UL's head coach.

Of coarse we will need to pay Butch $100,000 a year and give him a car for recruiting. This senerio is not just under Tim Floyd but I would like this for anyone we may hire before Butch.

Has Tim Floyd shown any interest in the job? Is he even scheduled for an interview? The interviews taking place are for the Head Coaches position. The head coach will hire his own assistants. If we get Pierre, it'll be as Head Coach. Personally, I think he would be a great hire.

Butch is the man. He is one of the candidates that really wants the job, and I think he would be here a while. The man is a proven recruiter, and will win here!

Not going to happen. End of story. If he wishes to enter the college ranks, he needs to pay his dues somwhere as an assistant first.

Does everyone realize that we don't want a long term coach?

A long term coach means that we've had a mildly successful run. Example, two NCAA tourny appearance in 6 years, with both being first round defeats.

We want a coach that comes in, makes 250k-300k, wins a game or two in the NCAA in a few years, and eventually gets courted to the promised land of coaching (600k-1M). Then repeat the cycle (ask Central Michigan football how that's working out for them).

The exception to this is a Howard Shell-in-burger type coach who is looking to retire and stay in one place regardless of how successful he may become. And there's also the very rare Tony Robichaux types who have great success but stay anyway.

IMO a coach's likelihood of "staying for a while" should not factor in our coaching decision.

Thanks, Z, but frankly I don't care if I'm the first to report something. This board is full of passionate Cajuns fans. I am willing to share info when I get it.

But I don't care if someone beats me to it.

He can recruit. Can he coach? Wasn't Lee a good recruiter under Evans, but he can't coach.

To answer that question, Lee was not Evans go to guy for recruiting. That was Paul Johnson. Lee was along for the ride most of the time.

Although I like your out of the box thinking, UL can't afford to hire both Floyd and Pierre. Butch isn't going to leave his OSU gig to become an assistant in Lafayette. I'd be happy if they could lure one or the other!

If we need to be certain that a guy has failed at the DI level elsewhere before hiring him, then he is not qualified.

If you want a "Cinderella Story", you better find someone that can work with mice and pumpkins and turn them into champions.

I would venture to say that Jonathan Pixley has coached up more players from Louisiana that played in HS and/or made it to the college ranks as a result of his efforts and inspiration, male and female alike; than any other coach in Louisiana. Most of these players never even played for him on a team, many of them would never have even made the cut on their HS team without his influence. Some drive 2-3 hours just to work with him. He has an open gym on Saturdays where players from anywhere and everywhere come to learn from him, and they do. Its no free ride or group clinic, he actually plays against them, challenges them, works the Hell out of them, and they come back for more...

Did I mention integrity? What about leadership? Innovation? When they make the movie, it will star Tom Hanks, and will portray him as a "Horse Whisperer" of basketball players...

In fairness, I understand what you are up against, because you have no idea who he is. Someone told me about this guy about 5 years ago, so I went to see his open gym one Saturday morning. There was a gym full of players from schools all over the dang place. Private schools, public schools, it did not seem to matter, there were even 3 guys there from LSU. Not just students mind you, scholarship players from LSU.

It would be a HUGE loss to the community if he decided to coach in the college ranks, so I certainly hope he would not even consider the position; but if you are looking for that rare 1 in a million guy that can turn mice and pumpkins into championships, he is your man IMO! _
Pixley is a good coach, however, I think Harvey Adger at Glen Oaks, Charles Smith at Peabody, and Glen Hawkins from Southern Lab have probably put more guys into college.

Not sure what Butch is making but the #2 guy at Kansas State (in the same League) is making 450K AS THE ASSISTANT. Stay Tuned.
