Butch once told me that coaching was over-rated. Talent on the court is what matters. He told me this in Tempe, right after we upset Oklahoma. I assure you that Marty Fletcher didn't "x&o" that win for us.
I admit, however, that two days later we were severely out-coached against New Mexico State.
I would love for Butch to come home, recruit some top-notch talent and let the chips fall where they may. One thing is for sure, UL basketball would be fun again.
I did not mean to infer that he "put more guys into college" from his team, and maybe the coaches you mentioned do the same sort of thing as he does. I meant he has helped more guys get there or improve after they arrived, most of which never played for him. I meant guys that went to him to better perfect their game. Somehow, word got out, and they came...
I think he may do camps and such now, but back then, it was more like a boxing club, players just randomly showed up to spar on the weekend. I was fascinated by the guy, what he did, the way he did it, and the number of kids that he seemed to help out :-)
Like I said, I am not really a basketball fan, just accidentally stumbled across this guy and thought he was special...just something unique about the way he pushed kids to improve and his ability to tweak their game...
Maybe not, Turb. If his strength is known to be recruiting and he is trying to convince a program trying to decide between choosing him or some other candidate who claims to be a superior X & O's guy it might be a way of selling his strength. If he could point to specific games or teams and show where the talent ruled and them rightly say that he is the guy to bring in the talent it might be an effective sales pitch.
NO. We are looking on the women's side. I do have my name in with Carr & Associates (Great Company), Bill Carr will do you right. He will get the right list to Mr. Walker (I'm sure of that). Good Luck down there with the search.
Meredith and I enjoyed our time down there and WE ARE PROUD OF WHAT WE BUILT. We have now moved on.
