The only thing I can say about Levi is that I wish he would have kept the ball a few more times. There has only been two QB's in my time watching the Cajuns (and I have been watching since the days of Roy Henry) who could run a perfect option. One was Brian Mitchell, the other was Michael DeSormeaux.
Brian didn't surprise me because he was the most gifted athlete on the team, as well at the most powerful in the weight room. He could out lift the O/D linemen.
DeSormeaux was a complete surprise. He looked slow and awkward, but no one could make the option work like him. No one knew for 5-7 yards if the running back had the ball or DeSormeaux. And he was tough.
If Levi can learn to read the LB's like the above two, he will be fine. Many don't remember, but Brian was very inaccurate passer his first year. He shared time with Richard Panell, who was a drop back passer, but not an option QB. Brian came back the second year and showed everyone he could do it all. The defenses had to respect his arm as well as his running ability. And Richard Panell was never heard of again.
I hope Levi improves each week. I think he made some rookie mistakes. I know he played last year, but last year he was just a spot QB. Now it is his show. He was probably nervous. If he improves each week, this will be a great season.
I'm as upset as the next guy we lost, but I did see much potential in Levi. Plus this game has to fall on the play calling of the coach as much as the mistakes on the field.
When you have a chance to make a statement on 4th and 1 from the opponents 3 yard line and you choose a trick play........not the smartest of calls. That says you are scared. I think the coaches will learn from this too though.
My take from the game, the team came prepared and ready to play which we couldn't say in the past also today we had to beat a team and the refs, lots of no calls and questionable calls, also
its hard to play from the one yard line, and Im not sure that first punt didnt hit the endzone line which should have been a touchback. Im optimistic about the season and look forward to a great season. We went toe to toe with what will probably be the best team we see this season
excellent post .. One caveat. The coaches know they are scared because they know the truth about the QB position. A trick play in their minds gave the greatest chance of blown coverage and hence, wide open WR or TE. Levi has potential. But potential equates to has not done it yet.
Brian was a freak of nature. To play like he did for 4 years and not be seriously injured, defied physics.
Desmo was an awesome option QB, who got injured, and so would Levi if he ran as much as he should to maximize his potential.
With our running game, our QB should be proficient at one thing, getting the ball downfield.
