Thread: 2019 QB camp competition could come with a twist

  1. UL Football 2019 QB camp competition could come with a twist

The quarterback battle could come with a twist, in the form of another entrant, when the Ragin’ Cajuns open their preseason camp next week.

Speaking Monday at the Sun Belt Conference’s football Media Day here, UL head coach Billy Napier said the Cajuns aren’t sure yet if recently acquired transfer quarterback Brayden Hawkins will be eligible this year

Hopefully Nick Saban's Bagman owes Napier a favor

What Coach Napier says about the QB’s publicly doesn’t really mean a whole lot to me because really he has no choice at this point. Now, what he does with his actions is what I’m looking for. If he plays 2 QB’s, and one performs obviously better than the other, then he better play the better one 99 percent of the time or it won’t end well. Last year worked because it was pretty even. But we need more than last years production out of that position. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens, not worried about what is said. jmo

What do you mean by " we need more than last year production out that position"?
that seems like its a incomplete statement, so we need more to achieve what?
last years production produced 7 wins, while having 2 P5, including Alabama, on the schedule, the D' also had and has, a lot to say about how we perform as a team. IMO the QB position will be an upgrade in performance, and coach knows what he's doing. however if QB production stays the same, I feel we can still have better results in wins and stats.

Last year's QB's were adequate game managers. If we want more success, we need our QB to be a game changer. Lewis is not a game changer. A healthy Jaive will be much more dynamic than either Lewis or Nunez was last season. Both freshmen are likely better than Lewis, as well. Even if Hawkins is not available, I doubt Lewis will be the starter by our first conference game.

QB play was the difference in the bowl game. That is not to say that Lewis performed poorly.

I would love for our QB toss 3000 yards but unless our defense vastly improves that wont be the case

We still need a guy to keep.the defense honest and make the critical throws can Lewis do that... spring game says no but to be fair we have not had a true FBS QB since Broadway before he got hurt.

Spring game told me that Jaive and McDowell both have more talent than Lewis. Lewis' only advantage is D1 experience.

Defensively, we have added a lot of talent the last two years. My only real concerns there are MLB, where we lack athleticism, and safety. Lack of experience may be an issue at other positions, but lack of talent will not.

Yeah. Definitely no experience with deuce Wallace and Terik Miller at safety. And our leading tackler from last year Boudreaux is totally not athletic at all.

They had someone on 1420 yesterday during the 6 o'clock hour that predicted Levi would be first team all Sun Belt QB, and guaranteed it. Also, I was unaware, but they unretired Brian Mitchell's #1 and are letting him wear it.

The guy said Levi was extremely accurate in the practice footage he received from Darren Walker. Said he looks like a completely different QB than what we saw last year.

Excited to see this come to fruition. Seems like the kid put in a ton of work. I hope he can lead us to a statement season.

If LL beats Zac Thomas out for 1st team all belt, we'll have a NY 6 type of year...

Napier also said that if Levi was 6'2 or 6'3 he could choose where he would playing for any P5 team in the country.
