I do not follow Sam Houston baseball very close. I watch when have the opportunity a couple times a year or so. It does not take long to see "The Pack" mentality that comes out in those players. Dont know if we will ever have the success that we had in 2014. I do look forward to seeing the same type of grit that those Deggs teams had.
If nothing else, this year has taught me to enjoy sports for the sport. Its really not about winning and losing. Its about enjoying a pastime that we all love and to escape reality for 3 hours at a time.
Excellent. Tony brought that mentality to me. I came to love UL baseball for so much more than Wins and Losses which often put me at odds with some here on RP. Matt needs to forge his own identity while paying homage to the past. As much as it pains and saddens me the bigger than baseball era is not going to come back. Tony made baseball our signature sport even in the down years and with due deference to softball. I hope Matt takes the reigns this morning and begins to build a new culture whatever that may be. There will never be another Tony. Don’t try
Just some stats from Deggs teams in SHSU.
In 2019 his team hit .301 with 50 HR and an OBA of .371, the downfall this year was the pitching staff as they had the highest ERA in the 5 years he was there at 5.48.
But look at the other 4 years.
2018 BA .279 ERA 3.78
2017 BA .301 ERA 3.80
2016 BA .291 ERA 3.89
2015 BA .284 ERA 3.53
UL over the same number of years
2019 BA .280 ERA 5.07
2018 BA .242 ERA 4.49
2017 BA .266 ERA 3.33
2016 BA .274 ERA 3.25
2015 BA .272 ERA 3.37
I cheer for the uniform. The coaches, players are transient and may or may not be lifetime Cajuns.
As for winning and losing. There’s no substitute for winning. A stadium less than a third full regularly, players failing miserably by definition can’t be enjoyable to watch for a sane person. Now a baseball purist having no horse in the race may enjoy a game for the pure value of the game.
I quit watching sports whenever my color is out of contesting for championships. Yes, I encouraged my kids win or lose, but these players aren’t your kids. They let you know that whenever they transfer.
Holy sh#@ that press conference was awesome! Very emotional as expected but damn, I'm ready for next season!!!
Very emotional, very professional, and very intense. Cant wait to see what the future brings. I'm 100% sure it will be fun to watch.
