Just wondering what does everyone think about the transfer portal in general? The pro's and con's?

If it is truly about being a student athlete, as it should be, then the portal is a great thing. Last I heard there were around 14K athletes in it looking for a change. This just makes it easier and more transparent than it was before and keeps coaches from having as much sway and power over them.
I think the thought process of the portal is fine. Since the seasons vary, I think each sport will need a drop dead date to submit your name to the portal to prevent last minute changes, especially due to the NLI signing dates.
Some things folks miss is that the schools still have the ability to make a transfer sit out a year if they choose to do so. Most think the only case where an ability to play right away is where the transfer is within a conference, but to the best of my understanding this is not correct. The student does have an appeal process within each school in the case there are not released to play immediately. What you'll find is most coaches won't block them as it would be hypocritical to accept transfers but refuse those of your players who might want to transfer.
After losing two All-Americans and a conference freshman of the year in the coaching change, we've been the beneficiary of some solid transfers over the next two years.
Does anyone really want someone on the team and in the locker room that doesn’t want to be here? Look at all the guys that committed to playing baseball here that aren’t being asked to come back, players should be able to go wherever they want. As soon as the coach doesn’t want/need them anymore they are cut.
Seems like its also set up for the big teams to poach talent from the mid majors.
Create a system to help people and someone will always abuse it, it’s become the American way
