Thread: Glasco seeks chance to boost RPI as Cajuns host Chanticleers

  1. UL Softball Glasco seeks chance to boost RPI as Cajuns host Chanticleers

    _
The biggest criterion UL softball is up against to host a regional is RPI.

The Cajuns currently sit at 20 in RPI and with Coastal Carolina coming into Lamson Park after dropping a three-game series last weekend to UT-Arlington, UL coach Gerry Glasco is struggling to find ways to bolster his team’s chances of hosting

How much will it hurt our RPI to play the 3 games in Monroe?

As much as playing CCU will help it.

Strictly from an SOS perspective, playing Monroe will more than offset the good of playing Coastal Carolina. IOW, it is still a negative to SOS ... and not a trivial one.

In any event, it does not matter. The Cajuns will not be a #1 seed. They simply do not have the schedule/resume. Awarding the Cajuns a #1 seed would be a full reversal of the criteria that the selection committee has been detailing the last few years.

That shows how outdated the RPI is. Too much importance placed on who you play vs how you play.

Glasco has so many connections in the SB world I predict our scheduling will get better over the next few years.

I don't think a 2 seed would be a great injustice this year. We haven't really had a chance to prove ourselves against any top 16 teams.

Agreed. As much as I think they are good enough to host, the Cajuns were just the beneficiaries of down years by a ton of the teams that they played and a couple of missed games in Norman.

I really want them to host because Lafayette is a great place to host a regional and I absolutely believe that they are on of the top 16 teams in the country. Possibly top 10. However, do we really know at this point considering we have not had a chance to competed against teams that we consider on the same level as we are? Teams in and around the top 25?

Just my opinion, but I'd travel any day instead of hosting as a 13-16. Softball is so top heavy and I don't want to have to beat a 1-4 seed at their house 2 out of 3. I want to see them in OKC.

The two go hand in hand. Kentucky is a perfect example of a team who has benefitted in the RPI rankings from who they have played and how they have played these teams. Take away their SEC schedule and look at their out of conference schedule this year which consisted of games against Oklahoma State (RPI 17), Oklahoma (RPI 1), Texas (RPI 5), James Madison (RPI 14), Oregon (RPI 37), Washington (RPI 4) and UCLA (2). All of those games were played away from their home stadium. Their record in these games was 2 and 5 and they were run-ruled in 3 of these losses. Kentucky currently has an RPI of 16 of which I would say a good portion was based upon their OOC schedule even though their overall record is average. IMO, for UL to gain any substantial credence from the NCAA, they are going to have the strengthen their OOC schedule. They certainly have the name recognition to get into the Mary Nutter or even the Clearwater tournament. This would probably mean having to give up one or maybe 2 of the early season tournaments that they normally host but their RPI would definitely benefit from this. Again, just my opinion.

You’re probably right. It’s also interesting to see many getting rewarded because they get to lose to many superior teams within their respective conferences. And they often get the privilege to lose to them at home.

I disagree about hosting. I 100% want to host. It gives us the very best shot at making a Super, once we get to a Super then I worry about who we are matched up with.
