  1. UL Soccer Louisiana Wins Fourth Straight; Blanks Nicholls, 2-0

Skyla Sykes broke a scoreless contest in the 76th minute and Gwen Mummert added an insurance goal eight minutes later on a penalty kick as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team blanked in-state opponent Nicholls, 2-0, on Wednesday at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.

Karleen Bedre and Kobi McNutt each were credited with an assist for Louisiana (4-2-1), which won its fourth straight match and surpassed last year's win total (3) in the process under first-year coach Lance Key. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee recorded her third shutout of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns and moved into a tie for fourth-place on the school's all-time win list with 12.

Louisiana, which held a decisive 16-1 advantage in shots, but only put five shots on goal, got all of the scoring it would need late in the second when Bedre started an attack on the left side. Her pass to McNutt just past midfield set the Cajuns up as Sykes would eventually get the ball deep in the Nicholls (2-2-1) zone and her shot skirted past Colonels' goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Ragin' Cajuns kept up their attack as they got the ball deep into the Nicholls zone and would take advantage of a handball by the Colonels inside the 18-yard box.

Mummert capitalized for Louisiana on the ensuing penalty kick, blasting a shot past Hurmerinta into the left corner of the goal, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-0 lead in the 84th minute.

The win for Louisiana marked its first four-match win streak since the 2013 season, when the Ragin' Cajuns earned wins over Sun Belt Conference foes ULM, Little Rock, Arkansas State and Texas State.

The Ragin' Cajuns held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks over Nicholls while outshooting the Colonels, 10-0, in the second half. Hurmerinta stopped three shots for Nicholls while Blaire Laiche attempted the Colonels' lone shot in the seventh minute.

Louisiana will wrap up non-conference play on Sunday (Sept. 15) when it travels to Natchitoches to face Northwestern State in a 1 p.m. contest at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. The Ragin' Cajuns will then open SBC action on Sept. 22 when it entertains South Alabama in a match that will be televised on Cox Sports Television and streamed on ESPN+.

You have to go back to 2013 to find 4 straight wins.

Four is also the team record, orginally set in 2006. Also team's SBC record.

This apparently got lost in the shuffle this weekend.

Streak broken by an SLC team.

I don’t know how good NSU is at soccer, but for sports like soccer, cross country, tennis, etc, we need to stop with “we should never lose to a SLC school”. Similarly, in those same sports, we’ve beaten the pants off of some P5 schools.

I honestly don’t give two ____s about soccer, other than believing the previous head coach of the UL program was way too arrogant and self-absorbed considering the complete non-success he ever had. However, when judging this program, what should be looked at is benchmarks such as possibly qualifying for the conference tournament for the first time ever.

That SLC team beat Texas State who was picked to win the SBC. We lost on the road with a minute left in the second overtime period.

This team is WAY ahead of where we were last year and not only on the pitch. The staff has done a great job in a short time of getting the rest of the soccer community around here back in their corner. We had two local players transfer back in this past year and are building out other relationships.

I know soccer hasn't been the strong suit of Louisiana but that is changing and we need to be part of that. LSU has two freshman from Acadiana who are contributing a lot of minutes to their program. There are a number of other state players coming up right now that could be big contributors as well. I'm confident this staff will position themselves to pick up some of these players.

We'll see on or a little before October 28th. If we're going to complete just to make the SBC turnament, SLC team or not, no business losing to the Demons.

Bad headline. A penalty kick (singular) decided the match in the 62'. Had me scratching my head how we ended in a 0-0 draw vs USA and then lost in kicks to ASU.
