Harvard gained nation attention through sports centuries ago. Their model subsequently reached critical mass and switched to elitism.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's indi Ivy League results were published nation wide in papers such as the Daily Advertiser and Lafayette Gazette.

    To your question, Neither.

The power of advertising is in name recognition.

When the time comes to make a purchase of any kind, the seller who has never been heard of is rarely in the equation.

The buyer rarely recalls how they became aware of the seller.

Athletics provides name recognition without pigeon holing the seller's academic opportunities.

What sports was Harvard playing in the 1600 and 1700's?

Are you saying a university would not survive without the brand recognition of athletics? That seems like a stretch. It doesn't seem logical that a university's prowess in sports has anything to do with their standing with students who are not looking for a sports program. I get a stud LB or QB comparing Bama, Michigan and Clemson for athletic standing but not the local 4.0 student who wants to be a doctor.

Curious if one could find the results of the Brown-Colgate matchup in the Advertiser or Advocate today.

The Advertiser published results of several core schools that eventually became the Ivy league. This was common nation wide.

The formation of the Southeastern Conference bumped Harvard results out of the local papers.

Here is some Harvard athletic history. https://www.gocrimson.com/informatio...ditiontimeline

Without athletics Dr. Stephens would have not grown UL to become the 2nd largest school in the State in just 39 years.

Harvard and it's like didn't need much help early on as being early has its advantages. That and the relatively small footprint of the early colonies.

As the country expanded west they certainly took advantage of the publicity athletics offered.

His final 3 out of high school were Arizona, Cal and Nevada. I'm thinking that Cal will be his destination if they have room for him. Arizona is a bit of a  ster fire with Miller issues and Brown grew up in the area. Seems like a natural fit.

Cal Bears have been pretty bad recently. And it looks like they have some guys in the transfer portal. Not sure what that means for Brown

He gets to play in a P5 conference and I'm sure will be given ample opportunities plus he's close to home. Probably works well for him considering he almost went there last year anyhow.

Reno is almost as close to Sacramento as the Bay Area!
    Did Mussellman leave Nevada?

Yes Musselman left but I'm a bit lost. What does Sacramento have to do with his decision? He grew up in the Napa area.
