Coaches have a little skin in the game as well when it comes to behavior of their players as they are ultimately responsible for their players' actions. Fair or not fair, that is what it is. Ask Hud.
The ONLY reason to have athletics as part of an educational institution is for the educational benefits conveyed by participating in a sport. Considering most sports at all amateur(including NCAA, even though their amateur status is a sham) levels operate in the red, that life education is the sole reason for existence.

As long as that life education involves winning, you are correct. Calipari and Coach K are not paid nearly $10 million per year to develop men. They are there to win. The one and done and early draft entry ensures that creating an unmatched educational and life lesson experience are not at the forefront of coaching.

Noope it is by far the #1 arm for advertising that a university has.

Athletics was the backbone of Ivy League growth.

They are not paid $10 mil to develop men.

They are paid for the advertising value they bring their respective institutions.

That is the point. And to win. Those two advertising attractions are the two highest paid coaches in the country and their programs are consistently at the top of the rankings.

When choosing an academic institution, do the top students in the country check Stanford's football record or Harvard's Heavyweight Crew standings? Or are you saying that donors need to see sports-related advertising by the athletic program?

Harvard gained nation attention through sports centuries ago. Their model subsequently reached critical mass and switched to elitism.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's indi Ivy League results were published nation wide in papers such as the Daily Advertiser and Lafayette Gazette.

    To your question, Neither.

The power of advertising is in name recognition.

When the time comes to make a purchase of any kind, the seller who has never been heard of is rarely in the equation.

The buyer rarely recalls how they became aware of the seller.

Athletics provides name recognition without pigeon holing the seller's academic opportunities.

What sports was Harvard playing in the 1600 and 1700's?

Are you saying a university would not survive without the brand recognition of athletics? That seems like a stretch. It doesn't seem logical that a university's prowess in sports has anything to do with their standing with students who are not looking for a sports program. I get a stud LB or QB comparing Bama, Michigan and Clemson for athletic standing but not the local 4.0 student who wants to be a doctor.

Curious if one could find the results of the Brown-Colgate matchup in the Advertiser or Advocate today.
