That's pretty much proving my point. Those 3 may have the skill sets to succeed like '14 but haven't been coached to their potential or even worse, coached into their demise by the current staff. This is more the direction I lean.
On the other hand, they just may not be as talented and therein lies the recruiting issue that this staff would have to claim. We would have been unable to capitalize on the success of '14.
There are two possible scenarios and neither bode well for the coaching staff. As I said earlier 80% of the current staff was here the year immediately after finishing the regular season as the #1 team in the nation. 4 years later, we are talking about what we need to do to make sure we make the conference tourney.
Cantrelle would've started, I know this team had Trahan and Conrad, but one of those guys would have been moved to another position, Tyler Girourd was a good player, but Trahan, Conrad and Cantrelle would have been a great infeild ala Hunter Kasuls, but you would not have been able to keep both off the field. A healthy Gunner would have been one of the weekend starters.
Todd Lott would have been hard to keep out of the lineup. May not have been an everyday guy, but would have platooned.
So the same staff that could not keep Lott in the lineup on a 💩 team last year would have had a hard time keeping out of the lineup in the 2014 team. I would like to hear more on that.
And do you really think Cantrelle would have had as long to get started on the 2014 team as he got last year and this. No way on the 2014 team would he have had those opportunities to pull out of the beginning of the year slumps.
I said earlier I could see Cantrelle playing out of position. In other words, not SS maybe 1B/3B. Not seeing the Lott angle unless we are taking Cape Lott and not UL Lott. No knock on him. I think Cape Lott is the real Lott but I'm not overly confident with him at the plate with RISP right now.
I'm no happier than anyone else here, and have discussed with the wife about changing my baseball tickets which I've had for 20 years to softball instead which I've attended for as long but never purchased season tickets as I couldn't afford both.
I'm pretty sure the 2014 team (which was our highest rated team ever) was predominately seniors and juniors (with the exception of Blake Trahan). Without doubt the ability of those folks was superior to a good number of today's players, and might have taken a number of positions over some of the 2000 team. That team had 10 freshman and sophomores on the roster, and out of those 10 (who were also recruited by Degg's like a few of the front line guys) only two wound up being regulars in future years, Blake Trahan (who was offered by Tony & Babs long before Deggs) and Nick Thurman. Recruiting isn't an exact science. What I'm hoping is that Wells is in charge or has approval of who we are offering or signing from the field positions starting this year and into the future. The incoming crop of pwere highly recruited (if you believe the services) but they were recruited & signed before Wells so I have some concerns. I'll probably give it a year to see if there is any improvement before making any changes in ticketing.
I never said he was a better middle infielder, I said one of those three would have been moved to another position (3B). Cantrelle/Trahan and Conrad > Girourd/Trahan and Conrad, the decision would have been between Girourd and Compton/Leonards at 1st and/or 3rd or possibly DH.
I never said Lott would have started, I said he would have found a spot in the lineup periodically/platooning.
No one mentioned Kasuls, except I said Cantrelle may have been moved to another position like Kasuls was, you need some reading comprehension. Kasuls came to UL as a SS, was moved to 2B, because of Cantrelle's talent.
Based on the season Cantrelle had last year, yes I believe he would have been given a little longer leash than others. This is a BS question from the beginning due to the fact of we don't have all the variants.
Yes, if Cantrelle was a Freshman in 2014 and would have started like he has this year, he would not have seen the lineup. But if Cantrelle would be a Sophomore or Junior in 2014 and had the Freshman year he did last year in 2013, then the staff would have given him a longer leash.
The question is what is the real Lott, the current one/Cape league or most of last year/beginning of this year. My only knock on Lott right now is he K's way too much or gets down 0-2 more than any player on the team.
