it’s easy to sit back and say the decision to keep him in the line up was correct now.. He needed to sit, period.

I won’t post names here because some of the players I’m going to mention are beloved names.. But do you really believe that? For some, yes, working your way into the lineup is a real thing. But you’d be surprised how many “names” absolutely DOGGED it in practice over the years here. Make no mistake, there is always a group of chosen players for this ball club. Just like you guys complain about Robe’s loyalty to coaches, there is as much loyalty (in some cases) to players and parents too.
Cantrelle is human just like anyone else. He, in my opinion, fell in love with himself a little bit. It would be hard not to, when people around the program are talking about you as a consensus All American candidate.
Truth of the matter: He needed to sit.
Also true: He is still our best PROVEN SS.
Also true: Nothing would be hurt had he sat and let someone behind him take some PT.
As I’ve said plenty of times, there is just something not right with the program right now. Things like this send messages to players and teammates. Since our new hitting coaches have come on board, I’ve heard several disgruntled players talk about these very situations. And I’m not talking bench warmers.
What if all he needed was to work his way out of the slump. Sitting on the bench and thinking about it may not have been the best. He stayed in the lineup and is now the hottest hitter we have. Seems like what they did worked. If everyone is so dead set on Dupuy playing, put him at 3rd, 1st, or left field and see what he can do. Wouldn't be the first time someone has played out of position. Heck, we don't even have a true first baseman on the team.
Once again, you are missing the point.
Anyone can play the “what if” game. What if he’d have been benched for a couple midweek games and came out of the slump 3 weeks ago? How many more wins do we have?
When your standard is “Produce to Play”, that standard needs to apply to everyone. When it doesn’t, you create problems. That is the larger issue, aside from his miserable start.
He could NOT be "out of the slump" and still be booting balls TO THIS DATE, and would be in the lineup every day. Like I was last year when he exited the slump, I am elated that it has finally happened this year and hope that the Cantrelle we are seeing now is the one that we see for the rest of the season. Further I hope it does not take him half a season to do the same next year LIKE IT HAS THIS YEAR AND LAST.
