Nice article. I thought this summed it up nicely:
"The difference is not extreme in any instance, but there is a difference. And it can be seen, not in the best players at the positions, but in the average ones. Your average shortstop could move to third. Your average third-sacker could certainly NOT move to short. They would either be too slow or to awkward or too, uh, mentally limited. That is why most pro infielders (with the exception of the huge first basemen) were shortstops at some point in their careers. They started off as the best athlete and were put at SS. At a certain level, their defense became average for the spot, so they were moved to another position."
After attending last night you can see what guys on our team fail the eyeball test. I was perplexed why an injured Lahare was playing while doing nothing at the plate. I got my answer last night. Our weekday pitchers? Not good enough command when ahead in the count.
Our biggest problem is we have no one in the batting order who scares anyone. I know the SBC typically has shaky pitching staffs past the Friday starter, but I would expect this team to struggle with consistency. A .500 record is probably what to expect with so few good hitters.
We are not a bad team, we just don’t have the 2-3 good bats in the middle of the lineup that can put pressure on the other team. You could tell last night how good Tulanes top 5 hitters were. Cantrell, Breaux and possibly Kasuls are the only position players who would start for Tulane. We actually have an everyday DH who has not hit a HR. We have to recruit better hitters.
