It has happened numerous times in both softball and baseball for various reasons. While things are changing now there have historically been a number of schools who could not meet the host requirements.

Also when you get down towards the bottom of hosting the committee certainly takes other factors into account. It has not been uncommon to see a 15 or 16 RPI not host.

I’d hate to sneak in as a host 15 or 16 then have to travel to 1 or 2. If the goal is Oklahoma City, we need to go to a 9, 10, 11 seed and win that regional and have a better shot at 6, 7 or 8.

There is definitely some truth to that. No matter if you want to wear that ring you have to eventually beat them all.

True, but I'd rather play the top 4 teams on neutral ground than at their home field

Looks like the Red team will head to BR as a 2 seed to me.

If we're truly a top 10 team like the poles say, then they should be worried as much or more than we are.

Assuming things stay the same there are other alternatives that would still meet the geo requirements. However one of the problems is the number of SEC teams that have to be sent somewhere else. So putting us at say Texas vs. an SEC team seems unlikely. Unfortunately the Purple People Eaters have a legit squad this year with multiple strong pitchers along with a pretty powerful lineup at the plate.

In the rpi era (2007-present), a G5 has NEVER bumped a P5 for a top 16 seed in softball. As you say, host requirements have relaxed and most every school now can easily meet the minimum physical standards.

I wasn't addressing G5 vs. P5 but rather straight up adjusted RPI Top 16 at selection time and the alignment with hosting which was the question being alluded to from the poster. The point being is that while the committee has typically followed RPI closely in relation to hosting venues it isn't set in stone towards the bottom of the site selection process. While you are correct on the G5 there have also been other questionable decisions on hosting and at times it is difficult to find anything in the numbers to justify some of their decisions.

Last year Arkansas took the 16th spot from Baylor which I found perplexing primarily because of Arkansas road record. Still can't figure out what the committee saw in order to do that. The overall body of work from Arkansas just did not seem fit enough to move them to a hosting spot over Baylor.

They also used to look at travel much more in the equation than they've done recently.
