What would you call 11 errors through 6 games? Or grooving fastballs over the heart of the plate on 0-2 counts? Or not getting the bunt down late in close games?
Things that Robe teams typically do well, we're losing games because of now.
If Robe can find anybody to close these games, the ship will right itself.
The dumpster fire is the bullpen. Everything else is window dressing.
My “cred” is well known. I don’t need your approval. Ive been involved with this program since before Tony and I’ll be here long after. I’m not a special pleader for the man.
The first 6 games of this season have been frustrating, like most of the last 2 years. But you football fans that watch baseball in the same vein want to put blanket statements over complicated issues. This year’s problems are their own. New staff, new players, new strategy at that plate. Fundamental changes on how you play the game do not take root in 6 games.
I see players who are unsure, scared, and falling back into bad habits. I see coaches trying to outthink themselves. I see lack of grit, which comes from lack of confidence. I see “team leaders” still feeling out their roles. I see a team with low self esteem.
None of this is acceptable. None of this has ONE answer.
Again, I’m not here to argue. But you can’t put it on Robe or Daniel when a young pitcher doesn’t understand how to waste a pitch. You can’t put it on the coaches when your (supposedly) all-everything SS can’t throw out a guy on a routine ground ball. Can’t put it on the coaches when your 4 hole hitter gets plssed when he’s asked to bunt with RISP.
I definitely see some decisions I can’t understand, though.
This might be good....popcorn anyone?
This about says it all in a nutshell.
I love Robe. I love his coaching style. I love his two boys. He has brought this university to places with the baseball program that I don't think many have dreamed it would be.
However, over the course of the last 6 games he has made many, many, many coaching decisions that are just not Rob'ish. This combined with lack of performance from those that we have high expectations of have left us at 1 and 5 on the season.
The puzzling part for me is that why we have at times moved away from coaching philosophies and game managements stratigies which in the past Robe has used to cover up deficiencies we are experiencing. That and pressing in coaching decisions has hurt us tremendously in these first 6 games.
One thing I love about our baseball fanbase is that we have a ton of knowledgeable baseball lifers that understand the game in depth. Some of that is due to Tony. But when I see some of these guys and they give me the ‘shrug’, there really isn’t anything to say. Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. And sometimes, there is a deeper problem.
I don’t know which one UL baseball falls under in 2019. Yet.
That's my point. In the past, I always felt that Robe was able to make sure we pitched and played defense way above our heads, even if we had absolutely no power or only 1 or 2 game changers at the plate. This season just feels different.
Hopefully they're working out kinks and will get it figured out, but coaching seems to be at fault (or at least partially at fault) for a lot of our issues early on.
