Fans of the Louisiana's athletic program have two different chances this month to help out their favorite sports and get in 18 holes of golf at the same time.

A pair of fund-raising events, one benefiting the Ragin’ Cajun golf program and the other helping supplement the baseball program budget, are scheduled during the next three weeks, both returning after successes in previous years.

The first of those comes next Tuesday when The Farm Golf Club hosts the Herbert Heymann Memorial Golf Day, a three-man scramble beginning at 1 p.m. and continuing a tradition that Heymann began in 1989 to raise funds for the Cajun Golf Association.

The event added approximately $25,000 to the program’s budget every year, and maybe not by accident the Cajuns won four conference titles in five years between 1989-93 and graduated three players — Mike Heinen, Craig Perks and Rob McKelvey — to the pro ranks. Since 1989, the tournament has raised nearly $300,000.

Since Heymann’s death in 2001, former Cajun players and long-time supporters have made sure the tradition continues.
