Will Long got an early jump off of third base on a bunt attempt by Kyle Olasin as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns squeezed home the go-ahead run in a 5-4 victory over Miami University Sunday afternoon at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
With the win Louisiana (5-1) claimed the series 2-1, their second series victory in as many weekends on the young season.
Miami (2-4) put up a three-spot in the eighth inning to forge a 4-all tie and spoil a masterful appearance by UL starter T.J. Geith who no-hit the Redhawks through the first 6 2/3 innings.
Long led off the eighth with a walk and would move over to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He later stole third base at the start of Olasin's at bat and two pitches later Olasin placed the bunt perfectly after Long broke from third.
Thad Griffen, who earned the win in relief, retired the Redhawks in order in the ninth. He tossed two innings in relief of Geith allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Jamaal Hollis, who issued the walk to Long to start the eighth, was saddled with the loss for Miami.
The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Wednesday, March 3 in Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m. Then it's back to "The Tigue" for a weekend series with Southern Miss being held Friday-Sunday, March 5-7.
Geith, making his "Tigue" Moore Field debut, struck out seven in seven innings and surrendered only two hits. It was his season-high in strikeouts and the tally moved him into a tie with Zach Osborne for the team lead with 13.
Matt Goulas' third triple of the season scored Brian Bowman who was hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning and UL was off to a quick 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns added to their lead in the next at bat, scoring pair in the second inning off RBI doubles from Dillon Guillory and Alex Fuselier.
MU starter Brooks Fiala kept his team in the game by retiring 10 of the next 11 Cajuns batters. The UL lead remained 3-0 after five complete.
The Redhawks broke up Geith's no-hit bid in the seventh inning when a two-out double came off the bat of Fiala. That scored Kyle Weldon who reached base on a fielding error to lead off the inning.
UL answered in their half of the seventh. Bowman led off with a double into the left field corner and advanced to third on a fielding error. Two batters later Goulas hit a fly ball that landed in shallow left field allowing Bowman to score and it was 4-1.
Miami's first three hitters in the top of the eighth reached base, the third came on a fielder's choice by Adam Eaton that scored Cory Klenke - who led off with a double - to cut the deficit to 4-2. That closed the book on Geith and the Cajuns brought in Griffen.
After a sacrifice bunt by Jon Edgington and a strikeout of Weldon there were two quick outs. Adam Weisenburger worked the count to 3-1 before driving a single up the middle to score a pair of runs and evened the score at 4-all.
