“When you win 27 games last year, people are going to come at you.”
Our guards are small. Our shooting is not good. Our Defense has no nastiness to it. We have one dog on the team and thats Gant. We need more dogs. Our recruiting has not gotten better over the years. Our D1 transfers if they work out, is simply a roll of the dice scenario.
A few takeaways from last nights game. We simply can't stay in front of the ball handler on offense. We get beat off the dribble every time and when Miller or Davis are in the game, they run high pick and roll to take advantage of their inability to defend it. We are giving up nearly 90 PPG in conference! If you guys noticed last night, many of their shots were either open layups or open perimeter shots. They are middle of the pack in team 3 PT shooting but shot 69% last night. That's because their guards can beat their man off the dribble, get in the lane and choose who to kick the ball out to or they just get a layup because our help defense is so bad.
Offensive numbers are not that bad from this team this year, we just can't stop anybody. Its insane. It's one thing when OK teams are just having a big night but the numbers suggest we are playing a big part in allowing teams to have a lot of success against us. We are at the bottom in nearly all team defensive categories and we are getting out rebounded this year by almost 3 rebounds per game. Last year, we outrebounded all opponents by 7 and I bet it was closer to 10 in conference games.
We have shooters but we lack playmakers. Even Stroman is really having a tough time getting around his man this year and creating like he did last year. His assist numbers are still pretty good but his turnovers are through the roof and a lot of them come from trying to get into the lane. We can kick the ball out to a number of guys who can knock down an open 3. We just don't have a lot of guys who can create off the dribble and put pressure on a defense to help. Last night was a perfect example. GSU seemed to get so many open layups or perimeter shots. We got few to none. We had to work much harder on offense to get shots than they did.
I think it is about time we quit recruiting "athletes" and start recruiting "Basketball players"! We could use a few guys that can actually shoot the ball rather than just relying on layups to score! Being able to rebound wouldn't be a bad thing either. Whatever it is we are doing now, it is not working!
I do not see us winning more than 2 games [App St and Little Rock] the rest of the year unless something changes. We might have a chance against Coastal or stAte, but I have very serious doubt that we can beat anyone else.
Watching on the + last night I noticed a guy in a grey sweatsuit in the huddle when the starters were coming out and then sitting next to Jalen Johnson on that first row behind the bench during the game. Anyone have info on who that is?
