Thread: Fouls Top Stroman's Avoid List

  1. UL Basketball Fouls Top Stroman's Avoid List

One of the last things UL coach Bob Marlin needs is for his starting senior point guard to get in foul trouble — especially when the starter’s backup is unavailable.

So when Marcus Stroman picked up his fourth foul with more than 14 minutes remaining in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ last outing, and UL beat Georgia Southern 87-85 on Saturday anyway, Marlin knows just how fortunate he was.

Don't think so. However it is critical that Stroman play about 35 minutes. Georgia Southern comeback came when he was on the bench last Saturday. Cajuns need to have several guys contribute in their available minutes to pull out more victories. It would be nice to play consistent for longer stretches. Note, they pulled out last minute wins at UNO, SLU, and Georgia Southern so far this year. That is a testament to their resolve but eventually that will catch up with them.

Stoman needs to learn to play more under control. He is a turnover machine. Very inconsistent play.

I wouldn’t call him a turnover machine but his assist to turnover ratio is down from 2.2 last year to 1.6 this year. For perspective Elfrid Payton’s career ratio was 1.4.

The problem is that he is being asked to carry more of the offensive load this year. Coach has stated as much. The issue is that he is not as good of a shooter as others so he is trying to penetrate and either get to the basket or kick out to open shooters. Teams know this and are providing a lot of help on him. Last year, he was able to do this with much less attention on him with all of our weapons. He's had a number of turnovers just through charges called on him while trying to get to the rim. I don't think its as bad as the numbers might show, I just think he's being called upon to do more than he's comfortable doing.

I think it has a lot to do with how the game is being called. If refs let players play a little handsy, it hinders his drive. No one is going to mistake him for a perimeter shooter.

His issue is he does tend to get out of control on the drive and that is where the charge calls come in. Refs will give the defender the benefit of the doubt when the offensive player is bordering on out of control. He's getting to into the lane which is where the turnover numbers and charges are coming from so the hand checking is not affecting him as much.
