Thought some might be interested in this, given our own aspirations:

Not too in-depth, but still manages to give some insight into other school's road blocks, what it took to overcome them, etc.

Interesting that she implies that admission standards were not a key factor.
Doesn't UL now have over $100M in research? How many Doctoral offerings do we have? How many does it take for R1 status? Enrollment is approaching 20,000. We have high level undergrad and graduate programs. We should be very close to R1 status now.
"UTEP's newest designation means the campus is a top-tier doctoral university with very high research activity. Carnegie measures this based on an institution's research expenditures, undergrad and graduate programs, and enrollment.
Officials said UTEP grew its annual research expenditures from $6 million to $95 million over 30 years. UTEP also increased the number of doctoral degree offerings from one to 22."
Yes, we topped $100 million last year. IDK about the docotoral degrees, but would sure like this info as well.

You have to graduate over 100 Doctoral Degrees, but they must vary by discipline. Or something like that. We are close, but not close enough.
Last night the SEC network had R1 news. Apparently the entire conference either is already, or on pace to reach R1.
Let’s work harder. Come on TJoe tell us the plan, strike up the push.
This was posted on CSNBBS by a Rice alum for Texas schools. I don't think Louisiana has anything like this. Where would UL fit into this criteria? We have over $100M in research. I think the only place we fall short is the endowment as we are about half way there.
To help other state universities catch up with UT and aTm, the Texas Legislature set up a Tier One fund that other state schools can access once they have met a set of metrics:
$45 million in annual expenditures on restricted research.
$400 million endowment.
High-achieving freshman class.
High-quality faculty.
Membership in the Association of Research Libraries, Phi Beta Kappa or equivalent national organization.
So far, Houston, Texas Tech, and UT-Dallas have made it.
Does anyone know the status of the Lourdes property acquisition? Is there still discussion about a possible medical school at UL once that property is acquired?
They had a PC trump card, it’s right there in the article. How many R-1 universities serve a minority population?
A huge selling point for UTEP. And a door opener for their future grants. A golden egg for UTEP when it comes to minority set asides. Kudos to their admin for their achievement.
The University of Southern Mississippi Takes Its Place Among Nation’s Leading Research Universities
The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading research institutions by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the pre-eminent classification of top doctoral research universities.
USM’s inclusion in the “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” category places the University in the distinguished company of institutions like Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and others. Only 130 institutions in the nation are classified as R1, which represents the highest level of research activity for universities.
