Doesn't UL now have over $100M in research? How many Doctoral offerings do we have? How many does it take for R1 status? Enrollment is approaching 20,000. We have high level undergrad and graduate programs. We should be very close to R1 status now.

You have to graduate over 100 Doctoral Degrees, but they must vary by discipline. Or something like that. We are close, but not close enough.

This was posted on CSNBBS by a Rice alum for Texas schools. I don't think Louisiana has anything like this. Where would UL fit into this criteria? We have over $100M in research. I think the only place we fall short is the endowment as we are about half way there.

To help other state universities catch up with UT and aTm, the Texas Legislature set up a Tier One fund that other state schools can access once they have met a set of metrics:

$45 million in annual expenditures on restricted research.
$400 million endowment.
High-achieving freshman class.
High-quality faculty.
Membership in the Association of Research Libraries, Phi Beta Kappa or equivalent national organization.

So far, Houston, Texas Tech, and UT-Dallas have made it.

It's still being discussed in the Nursing school.

They had a PC trump card, it’s right there in the article. How many R-1 universities serve a minority population?

A huge selling point for UTEP. And a door opener for their future grants. A golden egg for UTEP when it comes to minority set asides. Kudos to their admin for their achievement.
