Pay the base now because when the job opens up again later down the road, it will create an attraction for good coaches looking for a head coaching gig. It’s the same reason we were able to bring in Napier to become our football coach. A nicer salary attracts people whose qualities can compliment the pay.
I believe ALL energy and resources should be pointed towards getting the FB stadium project going.
I think we'll revisit Marlin's situation once funding for that project is secured. If that means Marlin hangs around for a couple more years, so be it.
Game opened as GASOU (-1) and is now a pick'em.
Over/Under is at 170
Bob Marlin is the highest paid coach in the league. Bob is under contract for the next 4+ seasons. You've argued it before that there is a level of success lacking over his tenure here based on what he has gotten from the university. Why does he need a raise because he had a good season?
I want this program's goals and expectations to align. We make goals of winning conference championships and going to the NCAA but currently, our administration and group of fans do not demand that we meet those goals. Obviously, that will not occur every year but we should have an outlined expectation with coach Marlin on frequency of those results as well as other defined successes. Currently, our expectations are that he is a good man, runs a good program and graduates his players. This is what has been cited to us coming from media members and administration. Those qualities do not match our goals as a team and program on a yearly basis.
Allow me to clarify for a quick second. Do I think we have underachieved in the 8 years? Yes, I think that 1 NIT and 1 NCAA tournament berth with a few conference championships has not been up to par of what's expected from the program. You'll hear me emphasize that when the people come in here to defend it. I also get critical when I constantly hear excuses for shortcomings. "Everybody is targeting us because we are a standard";"player X and Y got injured." It is what it is. I think we have many resources compared to conference peers to show more success. But that's my opinion. I have a right to one just like everyone else. But I've also stated that I have NEVER asked for Coach Marlin's job. Ever. Because people criticize, it doesn't mean that they automatically want a coach fired. I never understood that mindset. To me, it's about being more accountable. Just like baseball last year when we were batting .242 as a team. I didn't want Robe fired. It never even crossed my mind. But I was hoping changes would be made to correct the shortcomings, and he did. Now, we will see what those changes bring in just over a week. What the salary increase and contract extension adds is more accountability. From here on out, the results will be a direct correlation of whether or not the contract extension and raise was justified.
When Coach Napier was hired and saw the APC for the first time, the one word that came to his mind was "commitment." That's what I see from this basketball program when you raise the salary of a basketball coach because to me, this is about the job outside of just the person filling it. Coach Marlin will not be here forever. But when the next coach in line is searching for a head gig and sees what we pay and the incentives that go with it, it becomes an attractive spot to be in. I'm looking into the future here. But again, with the new contract, it's up to the coaches to fulfill the expectations. Everyone already knows mine: top 4 in the conference and more postseason (NIT or NCAA) appearances. Go and produce.
Our goal each and every year should be to win conference championship and go to the NCAA tournament not the NIT. If we want to be the best our goal should be the highest. I'm doubt Duke,Kentucky or any other school starts out each year with a goal of reaching the NIT. Going to the NIT is like going to prom with your sister.
Marlin makes way to much to produce the results he's putting forth. 1 NCAA appearance in 9 years is unacceptable. This university is not demanding enough from him. That's my opinion.
