I'm going to put answers in caps. I'm not yelling. Just differentiating between your comments and mine.

PERHAPS YOU DID NOT. BUT MANY DID. SEVERAL SAID "IF THE REGULAR SEASON MEANS NOTHING, WHY AM i BUYING SEASON TICKETS. YOU,, YOURSELF MAY NOT HAVE SAID IT AND I DON'T THINK I SUGGESTED THAT. BUT IT WAS SAID. BY MORE THAN ONE PERSON

But here is where you lose me. You said that Lannister and I would be a lot more quiet if we wouldn’t have lost that “one freaking game in March.” Well yeah! That “one freaking game” ended our NCAA tournament dreams. So of course I was upset. Who wouldn’t be?

I'M NOT SAYING YOU SHOULDN'T BE DISAPPOINTED. WE ALL WERE. BUT PUTTING ALL YOUR EMPHASIS ON THAT MEANS WHAT OTHERS ABOVE SAID. THE REGULAR SEASON MEANS NOTHING.

I’m going to take this a step further. Athletics is the # 1 marketing tool for a university. Outside of the Ivy League, most universities almost need athletics to promote their brand. No one would know who Butler, Cal State Fullerton, or Boise State would be if it weren’t for their respective success in certain sports. So here is the reality of making the NCAA Tournament. For four to five days, millions of people fill out brackets. It’s free publicity when those millions of people see your name on the bracket let alone choose you for an upset. Then, you’re on national tv playing in front of millions representing the name on your chest. It’s kind of a big deal, right?

WE ALL WANT TO BE THERE.

But on here, I get the privilege of reading and literally seeing people justify why we come up short of this opportunity. Here’s the thing. I’m also a numbers guy. I know that investing into something demands a return on what is being put in. Honestly, in 9 years, are we REALLY getting a return on our investment? And no, I don’t want Marlin fired. I just want accountability. For too many years, our administration has basically left us in the dark when it came to transparency. Basically, it was a “don’t ask questions; just donate” mindset.” Fortunately, Dr. Maggard has a different vision that I still do trust even with this Marlin contract extension. But with that comes demand for results. So far, in 9 years, we have had 1 tournament and 1 NIT appearance. You can spin the “2 championships in 5 years” in every direction to Sunday. But the fact is this: 1 NIT and 1 NCAA appearance in 9 years. If we are going to invest into this program like we have, don’t get upset that fans raise their eyebrows if they feel like we come up short of our goals. And that is to make the postseason. That’s it. Whether it’s three games or thirty, the goal at the beginning of every year is to make the postseason whether it is the NIT or NCAA. I’m not even going to give thought to the CIT because any tournament that requires a school to pay their way in is laughable to me and a waste of money.

FIRST OF ALL, YEAR NINE IS NOT COMPLETE.
AND, ANYONE WHO WANTS TO BE THE LEAST BIT FAIR WOULD SAY MARLIN INHERITED A MESS. IT TOOK HIM THREE YEARS TO GET IT STRAIGHT AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT. SO, IN MY OPINION, THE FAIR THING WOULD BE TO TAKE THE LAST FIVE YEARS. IN THAT TIME WE HAVE A TOURNAMENT TITLE AND A REGULAR SEASON TITLE. IF YOU WANT TO HARP ON EIGHT YEARS, THAT'S YOUR RIGHT. BUT I DON'T THINK YOU WOULD BE BEING FAIR.

I’m not asking to make the tournament every year. But to say that we can’t be a consistent top 3/4 program with the money we have in the chicken ____ Sun Belt Conference is unacceptable. That’s not me “being a millenial,” that’s me just asking for a return on what we put into the program.
WELL, GUESS WHAT. IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS WE'VE BEEN IN THE TOP FOUR IN THE LEAGUE FOUR TIMES.

Well, I was talking about NINE years. Again, 1 NIT and 1 NCAA tournament berth.

Oh, and we have made the conference finals ONCE......IN NINE YEARS.

    Nice try though.

470 posts and counting. This is the best promotion Marlin has done for the MBB program yet. At least we are talking about basketball as many of you knuckleheads are usually already talking about baseball starting lineups and crap like that. lol.

The question is whether they actually made money as in positive cash flow which is why I stated they are costs to the university as evidenced by a higher line item for expenses than revenue.

There are only a handful of athletic departments in the country that “make money” They will always “cost” because that’s how they budget. They will always spend more than they bring in because its not their money.
The only ones that do are from SEC, big 10 and big 12 and it’s mainly because they haven’t found ways to spend it yet.

Thanks, finally someone who "gets it." Zephyr, not one sport at this university completely pays for itself from revenues they generate. Some generate more than others. Some spend more than others. NONE make a profit. Like in a business. You know, cash flow. I have forgotten more accounting than you will ever know and have more business experience than then you can imagine. So, there you go.

The post was about a balance between the sports that don't generate "profit". Sorry, I need to be very clear there as they are buoyed by those sports who do. Basketball and football in most schools are the two money generators typically. Softball and baseball don't MAKE money i.e. they don't generate a profit.

You still don't get it. Neither do football or men's basketball at this university (and for that matter at most universities). SO YOUR POINT IS?

Yes, I did. I was even nice enough to respond to it. Don’t be mad that I’m not falling for your spin.

Marlin sold the farm to win last year and he will now have to pay the piper like CajunT said he has 2 years to pull it out ... will be a tall order

Life's too short to argue with you man. We all get it. However, what you aren't seeing is that football at many schools does make money. You were once talking about softball and baseball now you are referencing entire athletic programs. The link I'm posting here suggests this. Football and basketball, as per their line item revenues versus expenses made money. Softball and baseball did not. They cost us money from a revenue to expense relationship and its not close. We all get it. You just turned my words and distorted them to make it look like I was suggesting we don't generate any revenue from those sports which is not true. Bottom line is that most mid level programs don't make money and often lose money. I think just about everyone here understands that but some sports generate more money and potentially profit as opposed to others that distort these balances.
