Noticed Marcus Stroman was the highlight of this article. After the Toledo game, it was mentioned that Marcus was playing poorly and should be benched. I hope whoever wrote that comes up with something negative about him every game so as he can play as he did yesterday.

I asked my son if he reads fan boards from the schools that were recruiting him last spring....his reply: yes (& he still does), not much but the recruits he knew also all peeked at school fan forums that are recruiting them. And I can assure all of you the recruits very much talk/text each other.

Parents of recruits/players are regular visitors.....that I am 100% certain. Several parents openly asked questions to Head Coach on the official visit weekend based about negative stuff they read on fan forums. Especially true for mothers of recruits.....they didnt hold back at all.

I can assure all, negative post that are too personal or get excessive (piling on) in nature aint helping.

My experience as well, a delima for sure. How to support, stay involved, comment, be honest, and avoid negativity. Not an easy row to hoe.

It is impossible to avoid negativity as players, coaches, administrators are all human, make mistakes, and make decisions many do not agree with. When that happens, they will be called out on it. You would not have any discussion boards without some negativity. We probably don't have anymore here than other schools have. Personally, I don't think there are as many basketball players and family that follow message boards as participants in other sports do. All the shortcomings pointed out here in our basketball program did not stop the No. 2 player in the state last year and the No. 1 guy in the state this year from signing with us. Of course the positives are pointed out here as well so things may balance out.

This is why not having an insider only area is a disadvantage. We not only have to deal with trolls, but also our own fans who spout off in the moment. I think it hurts recruiting and attendance as well.

We are all well aware of what goes on at larger schools via their message boards. Use Tigerdroppings as an example. I'm sure most of us have seen the garbage spewed out by many of the people there and that's often when they are doing really well in a given sport. They still recruit well in the major sports. I think the "negativity" of the board is overblown. I know myself, I am willing to be critical of a coach or even player but that is different from negativity although many here still seem to have trouble with that relationship.

    Message board related.

I think potential players are attracted to interest and involvement above all else.

Those with $100MM+ budgets have far less concern over fan forums. Their issues (or lack of success) are national sports news. W Wade being recorded buying recruits resulted practically zero negative issues from LSU fans.....it brought them top recruits and are now ranked. Being caught cheating is simply an inconvenience.

So message boards have the power to negatively impact recruiting but don’t have the power to positively impact change within our own programs? Can’t have it both ways.

If any of my kids are ever recruited, I can assure you, what some anonymous fan on a message board thinks will have ZERO impact on their decision to attend. If a recruit is indeed swayed by a post or posts on message boards, we don’t need that kind of person playing for our school anyway. You have to be pretty insecure and/or weak minded to be bothered that much by fan rantings on the internet.
