Thread: MBB G6 Final: Louisiana 68, Tulane 61

Our mediocre coach just out coached an NBA coach whose had success.

In spite of my trepidation we actually had to reward him for last year with an extension.

We stole 2 games with sub par shooting. We lost one because of a perfect storm against us. Toledo shot lights out - 53% and 45.5%. We stunk it up at at 36% and 18%. Both of these scenarios normally don't happen in the same game. We shoot a little better OR they shoot average and we probably come out with a win against Toledo also.

Ladies sports are easier to coach than men’s sports bc they can build a program. When they sign a high school senior they have them for 4 years. They don’t worry about MLB draft taking juniors and screwing up the roster

You’re exactly correct. In 2 years Marlin will have a special team!

Despite the criticism here, look at how he stacks up offensively in the SBC over the last few years.

And Malik is the real deal as a player, as well as the St Louis transfer!

You have to do a whole bunch of things well when you shoot in the 30's. All of them are effort and focus plays. You have to minimize turnovers, play great defense, go to the glass hard, and make your free throws. We only had 7 turnovers which is excellent for a 40 minute game. We held Tulane to a percentage in the 30's as well, only allowed 27 second half points and forced 15 turnovers. We outrebounded a much bigger team and we shot just under 80 percent from the line. Still, you can't expect to win many games the way we have shot the ball recently. We have to find someone who can consistently knock down some perimeter shots. I keep hoping that will be Russell but he has yet to find his stroke although he hit two crucial ones today. He did have an injury over the summer which required surgery so maybe he has not fully recovered there. Going forward, it would not surprise me if we started shooting the ball a little better. Sometimes when you prove to yourself you can win without shooting well a few more drop in. Finally, this is the first time in my life I recall beating Tulane in basketball. That makes it a good day regardless of how much we struggled shooting the ball. Props to the guys one more time for finding a way to pull out a gritty win.
Hardy and Hayes are guys who have the ability to shoot it that we haven’t really seen get hot on a given night yet. Hayes looked really good against UVI but that was against competition similar to what he was used to facing at the JUCO level. That makes me think he hasn’t quite adjusted to the speed of the D-1 level yet. He also is struggling with his shooting stroke. He is 3 of 8 at the FT line after tonight after shooting 83% at the JUCO level last year. If he can get comfortable and find his stroke before conference play he could really make a difference.

Oh I don't know, some coaches have to compete with pop out drop outs.

We had two all Americans and conference freshman pitcher of the year leave us in a lurch last year. It’s absolutely ridiculous to try and diminish one coach vs another. Everything has it’s pluses and minuses. You’re either very good or you’re not.
