Report: Major Applewhite's future in Houston is "in doubt"

Shortly after promoting offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to the head coaching spot following the departure of Tom Herman for the Texas job, Houston super-booster and Board of Regents chairman Tilman Fertitta made a rather interesting statement.

"I think you can look forward to Major being here for many years, but he better win 9, 10, 11 games a year, too, from our standpoint."

"We did get rid of a coach that won eight games a few years ago," Fertitta added. "Don't ever forget that. We expect to win at the University of Houston."

Following Houston's rough 70-14 loss to Army tonight, a report from SB Nation points out that Major's future as the leader of the program is in doubt. The loss ties the worst loss in the history of the program, and is only the second time ever a team has hit 70-points in a bowl game.

After the game, Bruce Feldman tweeted that Houston offensive coordinator Kendal Briles had resigned, and many reports have long expected him to become the new offensive coordinator at Florida State. And he likely isn’t the only one heading to Tallahassee.

Houston must be crazy. The guy took them to a bowl game twice. We gave Big Fish a extension and raise. People here are very complacent. Not so at other schools who are on a crusade.

UPDATE: Following the initial publication of this story, the University of Houston issued a statement Saturday night: “Within the last several weeks, we have shown our commitment to our football program under Major with salary increases to specific positions in an attempt to retain his staff for the future,” A.D. Chris Pezman said.

Houston's president said they fire coaches that only win 8 games. Its ugly side of it but UH made a huge investment into their athletic programs and its a win at all cost mentality.

Ask ECU how that mentality worked out for them...

That’s a mistake unless they think he was left a depleted cupboard.

Ending weeks of speculation, Houston offensive coordinator Kendal Briles has been announced as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida State on Willie Taggart's staff.

Here are some details from the release:

"I'm excited about the addition of Kendal to our staff," Taggart said. "He brings play-calling experience and familiarity with the type of scheme and tempo we will run, which is similar to the offenses he has coordinated. His ability to recruit, manage an offensive staff, develop quarterbacks and make in-game adjustments will be beneficial to us as we evolve in our offense. Kendal has success at the Power 5 level and has also shown his adaptability to personnel and situations that occur during a season. He had multiple opportunities following the 2018 season and we feel the fit here will be a good one."

Briles will also handle the play-calling duties for the Seminoles. He’s served as the offensive coordinator at Baylor, FAU, and Houston the past several years.

Just a few weeks ago, Briles signed a new three-year contract at Houston that was set to make him the highest paid non-Power Five assistant in the country. He had been a sought after name with a number of high profile programs hoping to upgrade their offensive production.

    Footballscoop.com:

Details of Tom Arth’s contract at Akron

Tom Arth decided the Akron opening was the right place for a homecoming of sorts when he decided to leave UT-Chattanooga to become the new head coach of the Zips, and now we’ve got a look at the deal that brought him back to Ohio.

The former John Carroll (D-III – OH) head coach and player will make $500,000 annually, according to Crains Cleveland, who shared some of the contract details between Arth and Akron. Of that $500k, $425k is salary, $50k is designated for media appearances and work, and $25k is from a shoe and apparel deal.

The highest paid coaches in the MAC, according to USA Today’s latest research, are Western Michigan’s Tim Lester ($800k), NIU’s Rod Carey ($633k) and Ohio’s Frank Solich ($580k). Former Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego was the second highest paid coach in the league at $655k before being let go in late November.

Arth made $185,000 annually the past two seasons at Chattanooga.

Even LSU balked at hiring him last year tells you something about him
