Thread: Rebounders Club Tidbit

    Default Rebounders Club Tidbit

Tonight was the first Rebounders Club meeting of the year. In order to be fair to paying members, I will share only a couple of items from some meetings this year. Here are a few:

    1) Look for true freshman point guard Trajan Wesley to become a team leader as the season progresses. 2) Last year the Rebounders Club raised over 80 grand which I believe is the most raised by any support group. That goes against the belief that the staff does not work to bring revenue into their program-Note the staff did not bring this up-the club leader did. 3) Early signing period begins tomorrow and we should have some good news.

Mike, I was told the 80 grand is all that was raised by the Basketball program. So outside of Karen Hayes and others in the Rebound Club, there is no money being raised by Coach Marlin. A direct quote my man. More money is needed without a doubt, but we can't move forward if that is all MBB raises per season by the HC.

The Head coach, the staff, support personnel, and volunteers all work to raise funds. Karen does not do it all herself. She will tell you what she does is easy. All basketball contributors and contributions automatically roll into Rebounders. That is simply how they choose to account for their donations. New members have been added to the club this year which staff members helped bring in. Golf tournament they had in October was a success and that may allow last year's record to be surpassed.

If a true freshman point guard becomes "team leader" on a team with 3 senior starters, we got leadership problems.

I don't necessarily think this is an issue. First, it may just be a testament to the young man's maturity and leadership skills. Second, the PG position is a natural leadership position and role. Stroman is not the biggest talker out there. It just may not be a role he's comfortable in. Gant and Marquetti are fairly quiet guys on the court as well. Maybe you are right but I'd put my early money its more about Wesley's willingness to take on that role and his ability to do it.

Had not thought of it that way. Some people are natural leaders such as Bryce Washington and Wesley may be one of those. On the court it is Marcus Stroman's team at this point. You may see both Stroman and Wesley more frequently as the season progresses.

You are missing the point entirely Mike. The 80K raised is all that has been raised period. Now as you have stated, that is the largest amount of money raised in his tenure. It goes back to your initial statement that he is accused of not raising money, he doesn't raise nearly enough compared to his peers on campus in comparison to their budgets. Do you think 80K is a large enough amount funds for a D1 MBB program? Just asking.

Not enough but headed in the right direction.

My biggest concern with Coach Marlin, has been his unwillingness to raise funds for his program. Unfortunately at UL, this is part of the job for any sports HC. I understand some people don't feel comfortable doing it, but it is necessary for the growth of the program. Bob gets no pass from me because many of his peers like Coach Robicheaux have been doing it for years. I didn't mean to pop your good news, but the 80K is exactly the amount I heard was raised for the MBB program this year.

It would be nice if it were $800k.

My take is the quote says ‘a team leader’, not ‘the team leader’. I would be concerned as well, if he was the only team leader. Outside of superstars, like LeBron James or Magic Johnson, It is very difficult for a rookie to be the sole leader.
