I believe that what "the Krakatoa" will determine (if it indeed happens) is who among the G5 programs will continue to operate FBS programs, and who will opt for competing at the FCS level once again.

Right now, the vast majority of G5 programs fund their programs mainly with student fees. With the ever growing government debt, it's likely we'll see taxes rise at the state and local level in the future. Raising money through additional student fees will be a very hard sell going forward. Though perhaps less difficult than some others, the road ahead that we face will still be a very tough one.

1st we are a part of a macro trend in spectator sports of declining attendance. The NFL sees it, and NEARLY all college programs, especially ones at our level are experiencing it. Only a few programs with long, deep traditions have been able to buck this trend. There is NOTHING in our history to suggest we should be lumped with those few programs.

2nd. We are coming off a pretty negative few years. Both in wins losses and also in off field drama. People do not like to be associated with that.

3rd. The local economy is still rough, and for those that have recovered I'm sure many are still trying to rebuild savings. The university overshot on increasing prices and that will take a while to unravel.

4th. We still remember the early HUD years. That was a very special combination of circumstances. We had come off of several years of NEARLY getting over the hump and making a bowl. There was a LOT of pent up desire to finally see that. Then HUD comes in, and his overriding talent is hype. He did a great job of hyping the program. When that coincided with those 4 bowl games, interest peaked. Also, at the SAME EXACT TIME, the local economy boomed. So there was lots of excess money. It was a perfect storm, that we just cannot compare today's situation to.

This rebuilding will take longer. I'm still confident Napier will build a better foundation than HUD and we will see better fan support. But it will take time and has nothing to do with the local citizens being unusually fickle or whatever.

The community also needs to see this program win a bowl game outside of the New Orleans Bowl. The casual fan may think the NOLA Bowl is the ceiling for UL and Sun Belt football.

Absolutely. That and a signature win against a quality program.

There is no such thing as a "ceiling" with New Orleans Bowl appearances, simply because the opponent is always changing.

Our best NOLA Bowl win was arguably the San Diego St. win. Outside of that we beat other directional schools. All I'm saying is that the casual fan may need to see something different after 8 years of NOLA. Imagine if we were matched up with a lower tier ACC, Big 12 or SEC team in the Independence Bowl or another regional bowl. That would raise eyebrows.

I love the comforts of the NOLA bowl, but it's time we prove ourselves elsewhere for one year.

Not directional at all. Nevada, Tulane, East Carolina are all on par with SDSU historically. Even Southern Miss for many years viewed as a giant killer.

The reality is we were viewed as the directional school in many NOLA bowls.

The problem with your request is that short of a 10-1 with our one loss being to a Top 10 team and having at least one win over a Top 25, or going undefeated (thereby gaining a NY6 Bowl), the NOLA Bowl is our ceiling. NOLA gets first pick. If we lose both money games, going 10-2, they’re picking us. No NY6 Bowl is going to pick us, and the others that are “better” than NOLA all have tie-ins for other conferences.

Now I get the average college fan in Acadiana who’s used to LSU fans always wanting to be in the Sugar Bowl and maybe settling for the Heart of Dallas or Citrus Bowl aren’t aware of this, but that’s just the reality of our situation.

After the first NOLA Bowl victory, Zee and I were talking.

He commented the measure of us as a fan base wouldn't be how we dealt with winning. He said it would be how we dealt with the lean.

I think the proof is in the pudding.

We are one of 60 odd teams competing for one cherry bowl slot.

I fear the "ceiling" is irrelevant. I hate to think the "ceiling" is the reason.

Attention: we are all on the same team that want the same things, which is a prosperous UL. With that said, if anyone on this board thinks we should be content with staying in this conference, go join Authement at the nursing home or Farmer at University of Phoenix, where he is the AD.
