Not sure what the administration's expectation are. I know Coach Marlin has said his expectations are the same every year. Those are go undefeated at home, win conference regular season, win conference tournament, and advance in the NCAA tournament. Of course there has not been a season in what all that has been accomplished. In fact, it has never happened since we have been in the Dome. Still, I don't think we have an issue with the goals the program sets for itself.
I won't say much more than this post about the extension as I recognize I have difficulty being objective here. Several people have issues with the job Coach has done here and in some instances I recognize where they are coming from. However, the great majority of folks who go to the games regularly strongly support Coach Marlin and his entire staff. Several have told me (many who read things here but never post) they hope he is the coach for many more years to come. Those people would support the extension. In fact, I doubt one soul has mentioned to Dr. Maggard they think he has made a mistake here. With that being the case, why would he not move forward with his decision. Note, the buyout has now been reduced and I don't think would be an issue if a change had to be made.
Our top 5 will be as good as anyone in the conference. Where we really need to find some help is in our bench. Got a lot of young bodies there. Going to have to be able to lean on a few pretty much from the onset. I do think we have a shot at winning the conference title though.
Mike, like I said before it may come across as hating on Marlin but I think most of us are appreciative of what he's done. The issue I have is the long extensions he is granted and has been granted in the past for OK results. At times, we've had player retention issues that have seen large losses and those have to be examined. I have also questioned his overall ability to recruit the High School level kids to come here. We know about his W-L record against P5 and top 200 etc... These are things I wish we could address and improve on before we just keep giving out multi-year deals.
I thought last year was a great year and really brought back my passion for the program. We played a great style of ball and were exciting to watch. If we can build on that and start recruiting more players like Julien and get kids like Stroman, Marquetti and Gant the future is very bright and I would nothing left to say about his tenure.
I understand very few (perhaps no one) was calling for him to be let go. We would be the only school in history to fire the coach of the year (other than off court issues). I get it that people wonder why an extension now when there were two years remaining on the current deal. However, we would have had to make a decision in March anyway as very few schools let a coach recruit with only one year remaining. Dr. Maggard just decided to do it a few months early.
The Cajuns won 27 games last year.
The Cajuns won a Sun Belt Conference Championship last year.
Marlin was rewarded for the performance, which is normal.
If Gant isn't sick and Stove isn't hurt and we win the tournament, we aren't having this discussion.
But it's always something with Marlin. Cancer assistants, war with AAU coaches. Unloyal players. It's always something. So last year it was injuries at a particularly bad time.
Marty had a better record vs Floyd than Marlin vs Hunter.
I'm very doubtful he'd have beaten a team he lost to by 20 points last year. So maybe we'd of gotten into the final with all hands on deck, but it's a jump to say he'd have beaten Hunter.
