So we always give the coach a lotta credit for choosing the right staff, the right players he's not gonna get a mulligan for bad choices.

His record vs the top 200, 100 is what it is. The better SBC coaches have moved on to bigger jobs except for him and Hunter. Hunter owns Marlin. I'm recognizing him for what he is, slightly better than average in a lower level basketball conferences.

I’d perfer if Maggard wanted a much better basketball coach. He clearly doesn’t, so an early extension fills that box.
    Marlin inherited a total mess.

Coaches were being hired fired and retained based on player demands.

In short, the mates were running the asylum.

    Moms were dictating playing time.

    Marlin inherited a mess.

When Marlin instilled sanity the players balked, and the "players coach" mentioned made things worse.

Marlin had to start over in year 3.

With that, the question of why an extension now is one I cannot answer. My best guess is that he figured he did not want to have the coach recruit with only one year left on the contract which would have been the case come March. March was only 6 months away at the time the made the decision so they said why wait. It is possible the extension did help with recruiting in the early period. Again, I don't know why it was done now. I am only speculating with this post. I do know Dr. Maggard does think very highly of Coach Marlin as a person and coach. Recall, the only year he was AD for basektball was last season when we did do much better than predicted. That is his only sample in the portfolio.
I like him as a coach as well but that doesn't mean I think we should extend as we've discussed. Perhaps having a contract looming can motivate him to push the envelope as well and keep getting better? Either way, CajunExpress is in the minority on the firing of the basketball coach thing. What happens if we fall back into say, 5th place in the league and of course miss out on the NCAA ? We've just extended and given a raise to a coach who has slipped right back into the middle. I'm not really sure how a coach who is barely 55% in their time here can have so much job security. Anyhow, nothing can or will be done so its time to get ready for the season and Kansas.
