You're right, this can be debated forever. I agree with your assessment but we also have to remember than with the exception of 2 games per year which many of Marlin's most ardent supporters would suggest are unwinnable, he wins 58% of his games against like competition or lesser competition with little to no postseason success.

I thought his original contract called for an extension by contract much earlier but he delayed it at our request for a couple of years so we could pay for Hud?

I have no idea. His contract had an automatic extension provision? How nice for him.

If memory serves he had performance related incentives in his original contract that were met but not fulfilled.

I was one his biggest proponents for the longest time and still want to be. He runs a clean program and his players play hard. If we were to make a change I would be okay with because we can’t win any big games and he has had more than enough time to do that.

It is true he was asked to wait.

He inherited one or two all conferences players. Not sure that's a mess. Much of his problems were self administered. He chose the bad assistant coach. He signed onto the players who abandoned the program.

So we always give the coach a lotta credit for choosing the right staff, the right players he's not gonna get a mulligan for bad choices.

His record vs the top 200, 100 is what it is. The better SBC coaches have moved on to bigger jobs except for him and Hunter. Hunter owns Marlin. I'm recognizing him for what he is, slightly better than average in a lower level basketball conferences.

I’d perfer if Maggard wanted a much better basketball coach. He clearly doesn’t, so an early extension fills that box.

Nobody is talking about a change. That has not been suggested in these numerous posts. The point was why jump the gun on multi-year extensions when you don't have to. That's it.

There are some who have said they would like a change. Cajun Express earlier today said he would prefer if Dr. Maggard wanted a much better basketball coach. Express does realize that we are not going to fire the conference and state coach of the year however. He understands his view is a personal desire and not an expectation. With that, the question of why an extension now is one I cannot answer. My best guess is that he figured he did not want to have the coach recruit with only one year left on the contract which would have been the case come March. March was only 6 months away at the time the made the decision so they said why wait. It is possible the extension did help with recruiting in the early period. Again, I don't know why it was done now. I am only speculating with this post. I do know Dr. Maggard does think very highly of Coach Marlin as a person and coach. Recall, the only year he was AD for basektball was last season when we did do much better than predicted. That is his only sample in the portfolio.
