He relented on that when Nelson Schexnayder told him the program could not survive without these efforts. He did restrict setting up an RCAF almost until the end.

    Ray Blanco...

In the long run we got a person more interested in his own goals instead of what was best for than the university.

Mike, if he relented on that, it was after Charles Lancon died.

Coach Robe raised his own money.

Coach Rob was the one that got Dr. Savoie to allow athletes that didn't graduate to be inducted into the hall of fame like BJ Ryan.

I'll never forget my parents returning from a USL-sponsored parent's event for those who had kids that would be enrolled for the first time.

They called the man an absolute idiot. "one minute he says.....if for some reason you're concerned about your kid, you call us and we'll see what we can do to help you............a few minutes later he's saying.........don't know where your kid is, don't call us, we don't know either."

    LOL

Looking back decades later, it makes me wonder, given the age and timing, I wonder how much did their egos and attitudes on our side played into the demise of the basketball program.

All the "minor sport" coaches raised their own money, but Authemont had many sacred cows that were off limits for them to approach.

As an example, Lancon (and all other coaches) was prohibited from solicting funds from Matt Stuller, because Matt had endowed a chair. In fact, if Charles wanted to talk to anyone not on his traditional donor list, he had to get permission from Ray to initiate contact, even if he as only asking an athlete's parent to donate $100.

Ray would not allow us to create a track booster club; the local track and field officials association filled that role.

I think Nelson wanted to help, but he wouldnt cross Ray.

If you're asking if Blanco had something to do with bringing the death penalty on the men's basketball program, the answer would be yes.

Bingo. The complete stupidity and/or arrogance of a university president to forbid any of his coaches from approaching a certain donor just because they were a big academic donor. I mean...it would just be impossible for a person or entity to donate money to BOTH academics and athletics, right?

It was so bad that I quit donating money to track because i was afraid it would disappear into the university general fund. I would just ask Charles what equipment he needed, then buy it myself and donate it.

It wasn't just athletics. Hardly anyone was allowed to solicit anything without permission from Martin Hall.
